Criticism of one of television‘s most beloved stars, Bill Cosby, is escalating with renewed attention to allegations that he sexually assaulted women in several incidents decades ago. The latest indication is the cancellation of a planned appearance by Cosby, scheduled for Wednesday, on David Letterman‘s late-night show on CBS. The show declined to say whether Cosby withdrew from the appearance or the show decided to replace him. “We can‘t comment on the booking process,” a spokeswoman for the show, Kim Izzo-Emmet, said Friday.

Well this is a surprise. I always thought Bill was a decent family man, his show and image screamed 'upstanding citizen'. You can never be sure.

I suppose he could be innocent though...

But they're allegations - he hasn't been convicted.

There should be anonymity when something so serious is at allegations stage and when the person is that high-profile.

If it turns out that he's innocent, there'll be the "No smoke without fire" crowd ensuring mud sticks.

Like I said, he could very well be innocent but there's no doubt it doesn't look good for Bill.

Yup. They've been doing the rounds for years.

Seem to have come up again because Hannibal Buress started talking about it on stage recently.

It's just another media method of getting views.

Regardless if he did something or not, they'll exploit it for views. If actual evidence appears then great. If it makes him guilty, then really great. We condemn him then.

Until it's been proven he's not guilty so treating him as such is stupid and just buys into the idea of media views.

Yeh sorry, anyone - not just high-profile people. I was just thinking in terms of the way high-profile people would be more talked about, and subject to more trial by media.

I don't kniw how factual these things are but my mum hated this guy over 20 years ago as there were stories of him abusing women.

Again another trial by media. Like Maria Cahill and before I get called a Shinner. I DON'T VOTE AT ALL. WHEN THE IRISH PEOPLE RETURNED FF TO THE DAIL IN 2007 I GAVE UP WITH GENERAL ELECTIONS. no Sinn Fein candidates in North Tipp even if I was. I only vote in referendums.

I agree paying that settlement doesn't look good for him but Bill Cosby IS NOT A RAPIST UNTIL PROVEN IN A COURT OF LAW. JUST AS MARIA CAHILL ALLEGED ABUSER IS NOT A RAPIST/PAEDOPHILE UNTIL PROVEN IN A COURT OF LAW.

Police stations are always open. Its free to report a crime instead of hiding behind tabloid, rags and Twitter. What passes as journalism these days.

Now feel free to call me batshit crazy, but I think you just might possibly, maybe, have a bit of an agenda here.

Funny to see only last week he asked for people to make a "meme" of him...and the responses he got...

There allegations have hung over him for years. Also allegations that he has paid a few women off

Why didn't any of them press charges at the time ? And what is the definition of 'sexual assault' being used in the allegations ?

Thats Heathcliff Huxtable, not Bill Cosby

The rumours of Bill's sexual shenanigans have been circulating for years. He had previously faced civil charges which have been settled out of court.

Why don't people check up to see if anyone tried pressing charges at the time before griping that they didn't? So many mysteries...

    (hint: they did)

Let's not jump to conclusions without any evidence.

These are allegations only, there is every chance he is innocent.

You always got the impression watching The Cosby Show, that Bill didn't even know the cameras were rolling. That was the charm I suppose.

Really the accused in these cases should have some kind of anonymity?
At least until the trial is over

I am still in recovery after Rolf Harris was convicted.
And now you spring this on me OP?

    That's a tough one.

In principle I agree that an accused should have anonymity in sexual assault/rape cases given the enormous damage a false allegation can do.

However in recent years we have seen so many celebrities use their fame and power to squash or deflect sexual assault cases and get away with it.

They used their fame as a sword against their victims. I would be uneasy about now giving them a shield against the victims right to have their stories told.

There are some cases like R Kelly, Woody Allen etc where it seems patently obvious they have committed wrong doing and have gotten away with it for years.

At the very least we should have the ability to ensure that they can't bury the accusations, and that their victims can't be silenced.

US law isn't like that in the UK, where the police can come after e.g. Rolf Harris about something he allegedly did in the 1970s. The statute of limitations ran out years ago, so the only trial Cosby could be put through would be trial by media.

Government resting upon the will and universal suffrage of the people has no anchorage except in the people's intelligence.

This has been out in the open for ages.

There are plenty of articles about Clinton and rape allegations too.
