If everyone did what you want wouldn't that be the mainstream? Would it be bad then?

I don't even have a clue what "the mainstream" is any more with a lot of things, to the point that a band can get to the point of selling out Croke Park without me ever hearing them.

Thanks to the internet I can just focus on the things I like, whether it's mainstream or not is irrelevant.

Just that with the passing of time the good stuff remains in our memory. Take classic Hollywood. The year Casablanca came out there were hundreds of other studio pics released, but we only remember the good. Today our expectations of films are higher and so are the costs, so Hollywood will only take a large scale gamble on a "sure thing".

On the other hand one could well argue we're living through a period of some of the best TV drama ever. That's where the quality went.

Ya you're right. There was a good discussion on that theme at the recent web summit with Dana Brunetti. He said exactly that, big studios are only investing in sure things, such as the superhero type movies which have a huge fanbase.

But like everything there is a flip side and TV has benefited from that. Brunetti himself is executive producer on House of Cards, a groundbreaking piece of television.

People have been fed up of the mainstream since the '60s. People just need to ignore what they find crap, as much as possible (I know it's not always easy, especially with the internet) and partake of what they're interested in.

I find the comment about being happier when homeless strange. Cold, rainy nights and not having a home to go to?

Exactly. Youtube has allowed me to discover all sorts of different music, like Saudi Arabian techno for example. DJ Al Jamal is class.

The 'margins' are often as intellectually inert, hidebound and conformist as the so called mainstream. Even more sometimes as the members are often far less honest about their genuine tastes.

This might seem a bit of a rant, but recently my eyes have been opened up to the sorry state we are in on this planet. It all seems to be about money and nothing else. At present, Mainstream media/music/politics cannot be taken seriously, I've realised that to get truly inspired or learned, its better to limit social media, take no notice of politicians, and keep the radio switched off.
Instead, reading books, becoming more cultured(learning about the arts), watching classic movies(avoiding hollywood productions), developing healthy interests is the way to go.

Otherwise doomed to the life of an average chump

You should maybe look into Terrence McKenna or dare I say the psychedelic side of things?.

anyway, my good man; you should check out Terrence McKenna and that type of stuff .

The mainstream has always been shíte, and it's always co-opted and sanitised the alternative and subversive. Punk starts out as an aggressively anti-establishment aesthetic, attitude and sound in the late 1970s, by the early 2000s we were getting little mass-assembly shítheads like Busted. Look at the rave scene in the 1990s, now we have eejit americans covering themselves in glow-sticks and headdresses and talking about EDM and Molly. Even the original hipster stuff (dare I say "before it was cool" :P) from ten or so years ago has been globalised and commercialised on a massive scale, in a pretty tight timeframe.

The mainstream and the alternative are temporal states.

Today I went to a book club and we talked about Virgina Wolf's To the Lighthouse then I came home and watched 2 episodes of Rich Kids of Beverley Hills then studied a bit with some improvised jazz that was on the radio then stuck on some of Joe Strummer's solo stuff then put on Azealia Bank's 212 single about 4 times and danced to it while mopping my floor and cleaning the jacks.

I'm too auld to care anymore. I like what I like, mainstream or not. It doesn't have to be all or nothing.

And the Manic Street Preachers are great (although admittedly, less so now than they were)!

Mainstream does not necessarily equate to being wrong, it's empty carbs for the
empty mind on the way to work or after the gym, something to have on in the background while making the dinner

Your right about social media though, Facebook and all this other nonsense is the basic common denominator in the race to the bottom of human intelligence, it's something that has gotten out of control, who needs to live in a world where we need to be updated on your recent job interview or the fact that your mother makes a serious spag boll (nobody gives a flying fcuk) and to think your important enough in other peoples lives that you feel the need to constantly bombard people with your inane idiotic ramblings is more sad than anything else, go get a life you gobshties.

To be doomed to the life of an ordinary chum is your decision solely, what you make of life is your own choosing

True for you. I don't watch TV anymore, don't bother with social networking, I'm hardly on boards anymore and my life has improved massively.

What really improved my life though was when I started drinking beer from Wolf's Foreskin Microbrewery. I feel more inspired after every swig
