I read a piece about this the other night, that Charlie bit my finger has made 500k so far, the lad that recorded a taxi driver dancing out in the street has done very well, and that lad that spoofed his dad about failing his driving test, well he has made about 10k, or stands to.

I set up a channel for my 13 year old son. He does gaming videos but does not make any money for it.

    Maybe his videos are s***

I made €60 out of a crappy video of the storms last year. It was even better as I wasn't expecting anything :D

The gaming video industry is very saturated. It would be tough to get going now.

Old friend of mine makes a living from it, even deferred college for a year to concentrate more on it. Those stat sites can greatly over estimate how much they earn but it's true that the top youtubers like pewdipie are genuinely earning millions per year. The funniest thing is, pewdipie is just one guy who sits in his room and makes all of his own simple videos yet gets way more money than other people who have full blown production crews.

Merchandise like t-shirts and hoodies also make them pretty good money. These guys are earning more in a couple of months than most people do in an entire year lol, can't even hate because they saw an opportunity and took it successfully.

This. Unless you were close with one of the medium or big channels and they helped you out by promoting your videos. But even then you'd feel like a using prick lol.

Interesting stuff OP. I knew you could make money from it but I thought it was pittance tbh, Even the smaller channels (averaging about 5000 views a video) are still making 15000 a year according to that website!?

Some of what the biggest channels are making is criminal. Getting millions a year for talking over gameplay footage  capitalism at its best! Can't blame them for doing it though.

Thought about getting into it years ago, but didn't have the money to splash out on a camera/recording equipment. Kind of regret not making the investment now....

Youtubers who sign up as partners with youtube sign a contract to NEVER discus to anyone the amount of money they make from YT - it is all based on:
    -subscribers,
    -video uploads,
    -video views,
    -advertising,
    and lots more.

I think its something like €1 per a number of thousand views.... I THINK - DONT QUOTE ME ON THAT!!!

like beauty vlogs (video blogs) and tutorials are extremely popular - and I think a brand (lets say MAC) - they have come to blogers and asked would they try out these items - and they do - and they make a video on them, and I think they either get a lot of beauty stock for if - or money - its practically FREE advertising for the company/brand & the youtuber gets money off the views and everything else as I stated above!

I myself was thinking of doing vloging - but I tried filming myself - but my life is not exciting for anybody to take an interest in!!

Meh, get a camera and cat. Film it doing something mildly cute/amusing. Wait for it to roll in.

In fact it doesn't even have to be amusing... or cute.

One of my videos has reached 37 views.

It's of me singing Cotton Fields by CCR on the dashcam parked outside someone's house as the headlights shine on a doorstep ornament of a man fishing

I had a channel where I used simply upload underground Hip Hop music that wasn't on YouTube and 90% of the population wouldn't know about. Literally the song uploaded with the album art as the visual or just the rapper. I could upload a few videos a day if I felt like it. It was a pretty damn successful channel until copyright became a fashion trend and my channel was shut down. I started a new channel but again was shut down.

I plan on setting up a new channel maybe next summer but not to do with music.

Similar story here man, just had some rare or hard to find videos of biggie, rare performances etc and a while ago all these copyright strikes started hitting me, pain in the arse as i wasnt trying to profit in any way from it, just thought other biggie fans would like to have access to them.

Yeah I had uploaded music by dudes who literally had a fan base of few thousand taken down. Worst part was I stored my music on my old computer which has since been lost and weeks worth of music gone forever. The vast majority of it is not available to buy online anymore never mind finding it on YouTube. One rapper got in contact with me apologising for the political bullsh*t from his previous label and sent me signed CD's and stuff.

Fair play to him for that.

The whole copyright thing is annoying, media companies who just bought up specific videos id uploaded are the ones making the claims to take them off youtube, bad boy for example never was named as the company reporting content for copyright so its just a pain that you cant share videos like that.

    Feel your pain man

As far as I know, Social Blade doesn't take into account Youtube's 45% cut of all Ad Revenue as well as a Network's cut.
I obviously don't have the figures but it's those pesky naive kids that click every video and make them 100s of thousands.

A lot of the money comes from actually watching the Ads (so if Ads are skipped there's not much payed, bar a small fee to air the ads on that channel in the first place). I don't think kids have the attention span to sit through ads, but then again they're watching 30min videos of games so who knows.

It's up to the Channel whether or not to allow unskippable ads (which I imagine Adverstisers pay premium for). But the mere act of watching a video alone will not make the youtuber money. They made no money from Adblockers and I imagine a lot of young people use them.

Damn. I recorded some monkeys at Dublin Zoo a few years ago -- two baby monkeys were fighting over a stick (to play with) and the parent monkeys were trying to split them up. It was adorable.

I don't think I kept the footage. Shame.

I have past involvement with a number of soundboard prankcall channels, exclusively in a call editing process. For anybody confused type Frank Garrett into youtube for an eg, you make a soundboard of the prank call victim. No money is made obviously, it's a select community who enjoy victim soundboard prank calls.

I still like soundboard calls to this day, dialtone disasters is a channel I'd recommend to anybody wanting to get into the genre.

I make money from youtube and i only get a small amout of the views that some of those guys get. so people will watch your ads and sometimes even click on them

An American lad who does prank/social experiment type videos uploaded a video of his new gaff the other week. His videos get a lot of hits but I never would have thought you could make that kind of money out of YouTube videos. It's a lovely house with a stylish swimming pool out the back.
