ah thanks. I'll doff my cap next time I pass you. It's so nice of people to provide those facilities for us, and funded out if their own pockets as well.

Yes but he's going to have to get a car at some point in life. It depends on his situation but it needn't cost the earth. He's currently cycling 20km a day (10 there and 10 back)... not a good situation.

It saves him a gym membership though

I agree with OP. You do realise that cyclists are demonised and hated in this polluted car is king country.

Suggest fund-raising and or contact local authority to see if funding available.

    Proaction is your only hope.

Maybe it's because a lot of them break red lights and almost hit pedestrians on a frequent basis?

Why cycle when you have a jeep.

ya in the ideal world this would be great however, seeing as most schools in the country are struggling to cover their heating, insurance, etc costs without voluntary contributions from parents, I can't see good old government providing money for showers. Same for businesses - company I work for struggling to keep afloat. I cycle some days to work, luckily we have lockers so i have somewhere to leave clean clothes, deodrants, wipes, etc but most of my friends' work places people don't even have lockers.
Most, if not all schools and colleges already have gym facilities of some form in place so it would simply be a case of letting people use them. It's more of an issue for businesses.

And who is going to pay for this??
Change to the law so that it has to be incorporated into all new builds, like toilet and disabled access already are. If retro fitting give it a set number of years, credits against Employer PAYE perhaps? Ultimately it would encourage more activity on a societal level and reduce future healthcare costs so govt subsidy should be involved in some form.

The weather has nothing to do with it either way.

I insist that the most complicated solution has to be the correct one.

    Could febreeze solve it all.

At the end of the day if you choose to cycle to work then you should prepare for it. I used my motorbike to travel and did I demand showers or leave my wet gear dumped around my work?

NO. Why? Because I prepared for it. I got a cheap pair of golf waterproofs that not only did the job but also dried out in no time. No need for showers, change of clothes etc..

If you want to dress like a tour de france wannabe in the middle of winter then fine. But your company/college has no obligation to care for your actions outside working hours.

Cop on.. If you get wet going to the pub/nightclub are you going to insist they have showers and changing areas?? FFS

But its possible to make up .98 of a minute if dresses like a tour de france wannabe, plus the sun glasses.

I have never seen that in my life ( the crashing into pedestrian part ) but what I have seen on a number of occasions in Dublin city center is pedestrians crossing on a red light of there own ( usually in a group ) and being hit by a cyclist that way for not looking.

Was only a matter of time before that came up. Kudos. Dublin is certainly a law abiding nirvana as far as the motorist is concerned, and i always feel guilty as cyclist spoiling it for them

Can I mention the amount of motor cyclists that use bike lanes or hog the advance box at the lights?

I broke my collar bone a few years ago when a cyclist ran into me at a red light after he sped around a corner! So it's not impossible. He was pretty decent about it though and admitted it was his fault and didn't try to fob the responsibility on to someone else.

I do think it's rear though for it to cause injury, as opposed to a car, so maybe I'm just too delicate.

Daily cyclist and pedestrian in Dublin, occasional motorist.

Cyclists and pedestrians probably equally at fault when it comes to breaking lights. So if I'm in a group of say 6-8 cyclists waiting at the lights, perhaps 2 or 3 will take their chance breaking a red. Same with pedestrians - South quays are the worst on my way home. Usually tag behind a bus or car to ensure the way is kept clear of pedestrians crossing from temple bar to the river

But we all know that cars never break lights, right?

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=92964191&postcount=597

And we all know that cyclists kill 200+ people each year and maim thousands of others, right? Oh wait, no, it was the other group of road users, remind me which one?

Most, if not all schools and colleges already have gym facilities of some form in place so it would simply be a case of letting people use them. It's more of an issue for businesses.

Some Councils enforce this through planning permission for new build factories and offices, and require them to have showers and bike facilities.

I am in my second year of a Fetac lvl 6 course. I cycle 10km each way every day to get to and from college. I have done so for the last 14 months, through wind and rain hail.

    My college has:
    1. No showers
    2. No lockers or storage of any kind
    3. No changing rooms

I arrive in the mornings, get changed in a cubicle in the toilets, put my wet cycling gear on a radiator, and stash my dry gear in a utility closet.

Today I noticed, near the end of the day, that my cycling gear was missing from the radiator. After a short investigation, I discovered the vice-principal removed it, put it in a black bag, and left it with the porters.

I retrieved it from the porters and the vice-principal (and principal) told me I can no longer dry my cycling gear/runners on any radiator in the entire college.

I asked the vice-principal what I should do, to which she replied "Buy rain gear", with surprising hostility, and stormed off. I was just amazed by the entire situation, so I laughed and said "This is ****ing ridiculous" with a genuine smile on my face, to nobody in particular.

The principal brought me to her office, called back the vice principal, and forced me to apologise for using derogatory language in the general vicinity of the vice-principal. Then that was it. The topic was closed for discussion since I had used a bad word and needed to be berated like a twelve year old boy.

Granted, I should not have cursed. That was my mistake. I just find it a bit odd that they would make such a nonsense decision that affects only one student (on the wettest day of the year :D).

    So now my college has:
    1. No showers
    2. No lockers or storage of any kind
    3. No changing rooms
    4. Nowhere to dry your cycling gear

I can understand why they don't want gear left out to dry at random, but I can also understand why you are pi$$ed off at the lack of facilities. It would be interesting to hear what other facilities they have for staff or students - is there a car park? Or a canteen? Or any gym facilities?

Your best short term solution might be to bring a seperate set of gear with you to college. If you get cycling gear in Lidl or Aldi, it won't be too bulky or expensive. It does mean that you have to put your wet gear in a bag all day, which isn't ideal, but just throw it straight in the wash when you get home.

Is there any kind of student council or other way of giving feedback? Are there many other cyclists?

There is a HUGE difference between providing a service and BEING REQUIRED BY LAW to provide a service.

    If a school/company/whatever wants to provide car parking/bicycle parking/free showers/free food/free beds/free wifi/free bathrooms/free iPads/whatever else - cool.

But it's another thing entirely to require it.
