I think you scrimp about as much on sarcasm as you do tyres.

Having recently been in the business of getting new tyres, I still have a fresh memory of the whole situation. Let's begin with the first thing I see as an issue: every single tyre fitting place I have been to around Cork, practically only stocks cheap stuff. I know a big part of this is just the consequence of the customers only wanting cheap products and the garages not wanting to be left with piles of Continentals rotting away on the floor, but there must be more to it - read, bigger profits.

Fact is, almost all of them try to sell you the budget brands, and try hard at it. When I asked about "midrange" and "premium" prices, many garages actually tried to dissuade me: "oh they're expensive, you can get these (Landsail, LingLong) for half that!" or even "I have these (rubbish brand) on my own car and they're grand!".

In the end I managed to find one fitter who sourced Pirellis (225/50/R17, kind of oddball size) for around 130 each fitted, but it took a couple of weeks essentially stopping in any fitters I saw on the road and asking for quotes. I did it because I knew exactly what I was after, but I can see many people, even the ones not necessarily going for a bargain, getting fed up/discouraged and going for anything the garage can give them right away.

Any particular reason you didn't just order online and find a local place to stick them on?

Traction control on 99% of cars on the road consists of the car cutting power to the wheel that's slipping, so your wheel starts slipping because of the crap tyre and the car cuts the power to it....problem solved .

How will traction control help when you turn into a roundabout and your car starts sliding?

Multiple sarcasm detector failure going on around here today. Must be made in France.

I think people are using triangle sarcasm detectors made in China, sure isn't one sarcasm detector as good as another?

But the parent company is Michelin so they're just as good.

Looking forward to getting my Goodyears to replace my Continentals tomorrow now.

The only way to do it with higher end tyres. I get exactly what I want at better prices. Bit of a pain having to lump them to a fitters and watch them fitted with your heart in your mouth but what can you do.

If the amount of accidents this morning on major roads are anything to go by then it's safe to say that tyre prices aren't at the front of people's minds when maintaining their car.

Anyone on here in Dublin have a tyre machine?

One thing I won't skimp on.

Just fitted 4 new Bridgestones, 2 x 140 for rear, 2 x 125 for front. OK so 530 for a set of tyres that'll likely last me over a year... sure it's less than the tax ffs :pac:

3 serious collisions at M50 J13 SB today in the same spot that's prone to alot of surface water. Would love to see the tyres on the cars involved.

One of the most important jobs of a good set of tyres is to deal with the surface water effectively and keep the car planted.

Good thread! I brought my Civic with me when I came to the UK and as part of registering it over here the garage strongly recommended that I replace the tyres. I stupidly agreed but didn't specify brand. Shortly afterwards turned a corner in tesco and the back kicked out on. I took a look at the brand name afterwards and it was one of the new unknown brands. Reading what you guys are saying I should have gotten rid of them but I didn't know any better and adjusted my driving style. Luckily I had no further problems but I'm glad that I wasn't involved in any incidents before I replaced the car.

I'm going to be replacing the 2 front tyres on my Mazda 5 shortly. I've got Continental Sports Contact 3's on at the moment. It looks like they've been replaced by Sports Contact 5's. Is there a better option? Only thing I'd change if I could is for them to be quieter. Tyres are: 205/50 Y17

Because they either refuse to do so ("it's a business policy to only fit tires we source as we know about the quality blah blah") or spit out outrageous prices - like 20 euro per tire. Some of the places listed on "Eiretyres" as "fitting partners" didn't even know (or pretended to...) know what Eiretyres is.

The one I got the PZeros from would actually have fitted customer sourced tires - but he managed to match the online price considering 10 euro a corner fitting; Also, he had them the morning after - called me Friday afternoon with the quote, put the tyres on the following Saturday morning.

I haven't ordered tyres online in years, most high street places can now match or beat the online retailers for price, and thats for premium tyres too.

Yup, local guy put Continentals on the front of my car and his prices (fitted) were only a euro or 2 more expensive than the cheapest on-line price.

It's a fair price alright. Next time check out oponeo.ie, seem to be far cheaper than eiretyres.

I've looked at them but as a previous poster says, you can add a fair amount to get them fitted afterwards unless you are well known to a local garage.

    +1000
A fitter who will balance all 4 wheels, not hammer new weights over the old ones, will use stick-on weights on nice alloy wheels, replace the valves and caps, get the tires on the right way round, inform me when an alloy is warped, rather than just stick it back on without telling me, who doesn't subscribe to the mindset that any wheel, no matter how warped and badly balanced (or not at all) is "grand" once you stick on the rear, yes, that would be nice.
It used to be that tire places refused to balance rear wheels, even well-known large chains!
That to me is simply incomprehensible, how can a tire fitter argue that "ah shure, balancing is only so your steering wheel doesn't shake, it has not other purpose, so balancing the rears is completely unnecessary". Maybe in the 50's for a Morris Minor that will never go above 30 mp/h and was driven by a farmer and mostly had chickens for passengers, but not for a modern car on the motorway going 120+ km/h! Argh is all I can say.
You'd think that this is all the most basic requirement, like wiring a plug or changing a lightbulb to an electrician, but I am amazed how often one or more, or even all of the above, is gotten wrong.
And this is not just stories from long ago, I did get my car back earlier this year from a tire outlet in Limerick where the stick on weights where left on, one single new weight was hammered on the rim on one wheel that got a knock and was warped, (I wasn't told of that, of course) and needless to say it drove like sh*te.
If you are doing a 45 minute motorway commute, any wheel where the balancing is even a little off will be a huge annoyance.
Needless to say I won't be going back.
I had Kwik-fit crossthread one of my wheel studs by not putting on the nuts by hand and tightening with the impact wrench (i.e. they put the nut on directly with the wrench) and it was a bastard thing to take off. Of course you only find this out when you need to take the tyre off which was some 9 months later and they denied everything. It was some pain in the arse to put a new stud in there.

I went to a few places the last time i had to replace a punctured tyre and I was only offered utter ****e .... or else they would offer a bridgestone for mental money. Luckily there are plenty of online places that can do most good brands fairly quickly and plenty of places that will put the tyre on as well for a reasonable price.

The place that did my wifes cars tires was only 500 meters from my house and I never knew it was even there.

I checked oponeo for Asymettric 2's the last time i needed a set, they were cheaper than Eiretyres (Eiretyres fell by the wayside years ago anyway) but dearer than Camskill, discount tyres in Blanch beat them all when you take all costs into consideration.

I remember the first time i made up my mind to get decent tyres it was around 2003/4,i got my first set of big alloys and needed 4 225/40/18s and i wanted Goodyear F1 GSD3's (a great tyre with the classic anti aquaplane V tread)

Anyway, this was before the days of Eiretyres etc, i made a cup of tea and got out the yellow pages and started ringing around..

The conversation went like this almost word for word with everyplace i rang...

Im looking to price four tyres 225/40/18..
Yeah i can do you a set for X amount..
    I'm actually looking for a specific tyre,Good year F1s
Goodyear F1's what are you putting them on?
    A golf..
    A Golf ? Is it a GTI?
    No its a TDI.
    A TDI, jayus i wouldn't put F1's on a TDI..
    but i want to.
ok that'll be.. most quotes back then were in the region of 1000e

I eventually got so fed up with this line of questioning that the last place i rang when asked what i was putting them on,i replied a Ferrari 360 , your man nearly choked on the Euro signs he could see in front of him, i'll ring you back with a price i'll ring you back he promised - never heard from him again, i guess he worked out 225/40/18's dont fit a 360 lol.

Even with new Perillis on the front and hancoks on the rear I was dropping the speed today. Surprised not more accidents.

I rang around looking for some rear tyres earlier this year.

Me: "what have you in stock for 245/45/18?"
Mechanic: "what car are they for?"
    Me: "Nissan 350z"
Mechanic "hmm... just having a look here... we have Acceleras in stock... they're grand... put them on all my family's cars"
