Have you ever been forced to wear speedos at a swimming pool in France ?

    Have you?

    1. Totally agree with the idea from a hygiene point of view.
    2. Not a fookin hope in hell I'd wear them

Swimming in rugby shorts is like playing indoor soccer in a duffle coat.

    Long live proper swimming togs.

Not sure where they would be going with a hygiene argument though.

or washing your feet with your socks on, Oh sorry, that's something else

We've been over to France about a dozen times on holidays and near all campsites enforce the speedo's only swimming attire..
I don't really care too much but there's no doubt that those in worse shape look much worse in them.. Its not uncommon to see lifeguards call lads out of the pool for not wearing them..

Speedos should be mandatory for all water-based activity.

People who engage in "Golden showers" would probably tell you that Speedo's would defeat the purpose :pac:

I like a man in speedos. So much easier to check out their package.

Not if there's a beer belly hanging over it that's turned the speedos into a thong! :pac:

Now see it is comments like that that have been the fuel for all the feminist/misogynist crap of late. If a guy said "I like when women wear bikinis. So much easier to check out their snatch and tits" there would be a **** storm

C'est pour des raisons d'hygiène. Otherwise manky shorts that've been jammed into someone's sweaty hole for the last two days end up in the pool.

    Do they allow wellingtons?

I concur ! Hygiene reasons, better weather, shorts worn all day then worn in pool is not something I relish, even with the chlorine. Spend every summer staying in loads of campsites, and it is consistently enforced. Considering women going topless on the beach is commonplace, don't think a bit of nylon clad bulge is an issue. Don't think French people are very ... Hung up about it.

Yeah, we were on a school tour to Paris. There were about 20 fellas all with shorts ready to go swimming, and they wouldn't let us in. But the swimming pool had some to spare. That was probably the most uncomfortable hour of my life. God only knows how many people wore them before I got them.

Went to France this year and there was only a handful of idiots in speedos. Nobody seemed to care.

    Why are they idiots?

what with this notion that everyone wears shorts all day and doesn't change when going to the pool?

Do those charlic chomping chain smokers not just wear the budgie smugglers under their shorts? Is everyone whipping out a pristine set of ball tight speedos for the dip in the pool. Washed once a month I'd say. Hygiene indeed.

Fake socialist, champagne quaffing snail botherers.

My Spanish luva man wears a Speedo swimming (he'd go most days) as would most men here. Last Christmas I noticed it was falling apart and he had to wear two to compensate for the shoddiness of each of them.

I was home visiting over xmas so went into Arnotts to get it for him and asked the assistant working there where the Speedos werem presuming that's what all men wore to swim and he gave me a look like I was out of my mind and responds with,

"Budgie Smugglers? Jaysus we haven't had them in stock for years! I don't think we've had them in since the 1970s!" in the thickest north Dublin accent.

I was in tears laughing....and then started to feel really homesick. :(

I personally think they're dead sexeh!

A global ban on all Speedos is long overdue imo.

It's this kind of objectification that has me "tuck" so that I am smooth like a baby dolphin.

Can someone enlighten me about these "hygiene reasons"? You're swimming in a body of water surrounded by other naked folk, WTF is the big difference between trunks and speedos?

Cookie Monster when it's 30+ degrees out yes, you see a lot of young fellows in France going around in shorts (can't believe I have to type this), especially so in campsites and holiday places. I'm sure some would change, and I'm also positive some would not.

MM presumably the difference is that speedos, and ladies swimsuits ftm are a lot less comfortable to wear all day than this :
    http://cdn2.thegloss.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/07/windowslivewriterophawaiiantoddlerswimshorts-bbc2op-hawaiian-toddler-swim-short-thumb.jpg

Therefore it is a lot less likely that the tight ones may have been worn all day. Now I don't want to be too graphic, but anyone who's ever done laundry for a teenage boy would have a pretty good idea why it is not desirable that he should wear day-long worn undergarments in a pool. You know, some days are good, some other days... And that's if the boy changes shorts every day even.

Speedo worn exclusively in pool vs shorts possibly worn all day, possibly several days ?
It's a no brainer for me.
And also I quite like Mr M in speedos, little belly and all, and avert my eyes at the sight of all others, of course. Most of the time.

It's to do with water conservation and hygiene - Bermudas and the like contaminate pools, multiplied by 1000s of uses of a pool per day and it adds up.

Found out the hard way in France on the holliers a few years back - no speedos to be had locally so ended up in a pair of Carrefour knock offs.

French officials have banned a Muslim woman from swimming in a public pool while wearing a swimsuit that covers her entire body.

The woman had swum in July in the pool in Emerainville, east of Paris, in the "burkini" - a loose-fitting garment resembling a wetsuit with a hood.

But staff stopped her from swimming in August, citing hygiene concerns.

It comes as the government examines ways to limit burka use after the president said they reduced dignity.

France is home to Western Europe's largest population of Muslims, with about 5 million living there.

At the pool, staff "reminded [the woman] of the rules that apply in all (public) swimming pools which forbid swimming while clothed," pool management official Daniel Guillaume was quoted by AFP as saying.

I guess that Nigella Lawson won't be allowed to swim anywhere in France.

I honestly don't get this hygiene thing at all.

I used to live in 'Murica, Georgia & Florida specifically. There, it was very common for apt complexes to have a pool, or housing estates (what they call subdivisions) to have a community pool, or for people to have pool in their back gardens. People swimming was an every day thing there, not just something that you did on your holliers. And no one wore speedos. Ever. Board shorts were the norm, not speedos. Even on beaches, you'd never see the natives in Speedos, just board shorts, like these... http://www.pacsun.com/mens/board-shorts/

Over there, men wear shorts far more frequently than they do on this side of the pond. Yet you'd never see one of them jumping into a pool wearing the shorts that they had been wearing prior to going swimming. They have the cop on to put a proper pair of swim trunks on. Is it that French men (or other European tourists) just don't have that element of cop on, or an in bred sense of personal hygiene, that it has to be laid out for them by the Speedo police? That's effin' rank if it is ! :(

Speedos are more common in countries whose citizens feel positively about how they look, whether that feeling is grounded in reality or not.
In Ireland we would call that thinking a lot of yourself.
Budgie smugglers are/used to be also quite popular in Australia, but I don't think it's enshrined in law there that you have to wear them.
