    I have not.

    Have you?

Yes, in a holiday village near Montpellier a couple of years ago, no shorts allowed and signs up everywhere. I had rugby shorts and they were banned. When I asked about it I was told that this is the rule everywhere in the country. I have no idea if that's true or not but it's what I was told. To be honest, I didn't give a shi'ite about wearing speedos but my teenage daughter wouldn't sit near me when I was wearing them.

Don't know if it's all France but was looking at a Disneyland Paris hotel last week, had a pool and the rule was speedo's only, may be a hygiene thing

It's ben like that for over 20 years. But I used to use an outdoor pool in board shorts with no problems. But was turned back from 2 indoor pools.

Yip..i got asked to change to "stick-on" swim shorts, even though the ones i had on were speedo!!
    Fecking french perverts.

I've never been in a swimming pool in France.

    Or speedos.

It's a hygiene thing and I wish we had it here. Where I go swimming, the place is full of disgusting lads who come straight down from the gym and hop in the pool/jacuzzi wearing sweaty jocks under their football shorts

    Manky creatures

I thought for a minute "This can't really be a thing?" when I read the opening post, I'm a bit mystified at the reasons behind it tbh.

    Why?

I know that in Lourdes alright they have you wear just a small towel before they whip it off you and throw you in the pool, but what's the story with the speedos?

Do you have to wear a rubber cap too?

Do they put chlorine in the water?

Yes it's a widespread rule and it makes perfect sense. It's hot here in the summer so you have people wearing shorts all day, doing god knows what, and it'd be really unhygienic if they were to then get into a pool.
Speedos aren't pretty but I don't have a problem with the rule at all.

I would have been happy if the manufacturer just sewed their logo on more securely. The 's' came off mine and I hadn't realised. Caused quite a fuss.

This the pool near the Sequoia Lodge? I swam in that in shorts, plenty of others with shorts on too

Swimming in rugby shorts is like playing indoor soccer in a duffle coat.

    Long live proper swimming togs.

Not sure where they would be going with a hygiene argument though.

Get some togs mate and you'll get anything up to 10 secs off your 100m time.

I wouldn't have had a problem with the rule when I had to years ago, if everyone in the complex wasn't riding and getting blowjobs in the pool. Really defeats the purpose! Got straight out after that!

    Where is this swimming pool?

It was a large swimming complex yoke near Stade de France, I think... or maybe not, can't remember, was with the school! :o

Unhygienic? Well, what's the point of the chlorine in the pool then?

I agree with a previous poster: French perverts... :P

One of the pools I swim at in London has a poster up at the front desk reminding people not to wear jeans or tracksuit bottoms in the pool

I'm all in favour of people having to wear proper togs, and definitely showering before they go near the pool.

Was in France almost 20 years ago, and can confirm. Apparently it's the law, but most places didn't enforce it. Except the one in the campsite where I stayed for most of my holiday...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,106 ✭✭✭catallus

Speedos should be mandatory for all water-based activity.

Went to France this year and there was only a handful of idiots in speedos. Nobody seemed to care.

We've been over to France about a dozen times on holidays and near all campsites enforce the speedo's only swimming attire..
I don't really care too much but there's no doubt that those in worse shape look much worse in them.. Its not uncommon to see lifeguards call lads out of the pool for not wearing them..

People who engage in "Golden showers" would probably tell you that Speedo's would defeat the purpose :pac:

Not if there's a beer belly hanging over it that's turned the speedos into a thong! :pac:

Now see it is comments like that that have been the fuel for all the feminist/misogynist crap of late. If a guy said "I like when women wear bikinis. So much easier to check out their snatch and tits" there would be a **** storm

C'est pour des raisons d'hygiène. Otherwise manky shorts that've been jammed into someone's sweaty hole for the last two days end up in the pool.

I concur ! Hygiene reasons, better weather, shorts worn all day then worn in pool is not something I relish, even with the chlorine. Spend every summer staying in loads of campsites, and it is consistently enforced. Considering women going topless on the beach is commonplace, don't think a bit of nylon clad bulge is an issue. Don't think French people are very ... Hung up about it.

Yeah, we were on a school tour to Paris. There were about 20 fellas all with shorts ready to go swimming, and they wouldn't let us in. But the swimming pool had some to spare. That was probably the most uncomfortable hour of my life. God only knows how many people wore them before I got them.

what with this notion that everyone wears shorts all day and doesn't change when going to the pool?

Do those charlic chomping chain smokers not just wear the budgie smugglers under their shorts? Is everyone whipping out a pristine set of ball tight speedos for the dip in the pool. Washed once a month I'd say. Hygiene indeed.

Fake socialist, champagne quaffing snail botherers.

My Spanish luva man wears a Speedo swimming (he'd go most days) as would most men here. Last Christmas I noticed it was falling apart and he had to wear two to compensate for the shoddiness of each of them.

I was home visiting over xmas so went into Arnotts to get it for him and asked the assistant working there where the Speedos werem presuming that's what all men wore to swim and he gave me a look like I was out of my mind and responds with,

"Budgie Smugglers? Jaysus we haven't had them in stock for years! I don't think we've had them in since the 1970s!" in the thickest north Dublin accent.

I was in tears laughing....and then started to feel really homesick. :(

I personally think they're dead sexeh!

A global ban on all Speedos is long overdue imo.
