I need to get a spare key for a 2010 passat, it is the one that slots into the dash, with no actual metal key type part on it.

VW quoting €250 for key and €60 for coding including vat. My question is...and I suppose I should have asked VW first but i'd just like to throw it out here to see if anyone would know...

if I was to get the same type key from a car dismantlers, could this then be coded to my car? if it worked it would then only cost €60 plus dismantlers fee. has anyone done this?

They're fitted with crypto48 transponders. And these transponders cannot be coded more than once. So new one is the only option.

But buying one off ebay (make sure NEW one, never coded) and coding somewhere else would be significantly cheaper than dealer's way.

Okay, now I am a little confused

When I enquired with vw, I explained that that there was another 'lost' key out there somewhere (hence reason I am looking for new key) that I did not want to work with car

He said that if I got a new key from them they would code it to car along with key I currently have and that would render lost key obsolete.

This does not tie in with what you are saying as this would mean that the key I currently have would be getting RECODED to the car,

Was he telling me a little porkie?

Not really. Each transponder has it's own, unique code. They'll delete lost key from car's immo and keep the one you have at the moment. And put a new key into a system.

    More-less like that. ;)

I was in the same position a few years back and had to go this route. It's your only option I'm afraid....
