I request permission to land when I was around 10km away and they said request when you are within 7500m of the port

Anybody able to pick up missions in the Starport Services after the new update? Can't connect to the server apparently..

gave this a go again. failed the 1st tutorial on docking 5 times and just gave up. it's just retarded tbh, there is no reason it should be that difficult. and it's not realistic, i can't imagine a docking system in the future that could allow so many crashes and start shooting you for the audacity of hitting things inside a giant pinball machine. and why on earth would a space station with no autopilot make their entrance just barely big enough to fit a small ship through? something so basic and fundamental in a computer game should be very simple to do. this is like making reloading in a shooting game a 5 minute minigame where you need to maneuver your bullets from your pocket with your fingers and guide them freehand into your gun using just the qwerty keys.

    rant over.

I've done barrel rolls through the port so it's not small. It looks small but really, it isn't.

The purpose of the tutorial is to allow you to practise your skills in every aspect of the game mainly the docking as it's the one you will have to do everytime you want to go to a port.

Stick with it and go slowly. If you are using mouse, turn down sensitivity.

Honestly it's not that bad - wait till you've to dock on the outside of a mining platform

problem there is just keyboard and mouse.

even though i had saitek x52pro i gave a go using the keyboard and mouse, imo this is a joystick game only.

I agree, I dusted down my trusty Extreme 3D Pro that had been thrown down the back of the wardrobe and it works very well with this game. I just need to get VoiceAttack set up and then keyboard use should be minimal.

Yeah, you really need a joystick for this game to be anyway playable a any decent level, in saying that, I did manage to dock first time with my mouse and keyboard, but it did take a while.....and a wee bit of cursing:eek:

I got this from a mate of mine from our clan site. If you're using the Thrustmaster hotas. Here's a link to the set-up, you can print it out or if you have a second screen, leave it up there for reference until you get used to it. https://docs.google.com/drawings/d/1s9mXzcyx_jBsmxCa9OIH9uX9LI-iwhBegwuI5F8vEIw/edit

    Also here's the binding file: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B6f-oR ... dqZ2M/edit

try putting the bindings file in ...

    "C:\Users\yournamehere\appdata\local\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous\Options\Bindings"
*note.. the apdata file is a hidden file and you need to show hidden files *

with the filename extention .binds and make sure that your joystick is plugged in before you log in to play

I find this, combined with voice attack, I don't need keyboard at all:-)

What is this voice attack you speak off?? :)

Oh man, you NEED voice attack for this game. http://www.voiceattack.com/
Basically you can map voice commands to certain keystrokes. ie: when I say 'Gear down' I have it set to press the 'insert' key for 0.1 of a second and my landing gear gets deployed. It's ideal for Elite as I have my power systems and more mapped. So for power to systems I just say 'power systems' for engines i say 'power engines'. It saves time, especially when in a dog fight, no need to look for keys. Here's a video, gives you the rundown on it. Simple to set up, free 21 day trial and only about €6 for full version. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P0JnwTiVwOU

    Or..
"Combat Stations" - Deploy weapons and transfer power to weapons systems.
"Run Away!" - Retract Weapons, transfer power to engines and full speed ahead.
"Request Docking" - Call up navigation's panel, tab across to contacts, select station & request docking.

I just downloaded Beta yesterday. I had ordered a new GPU to upgrade my 8 year old DELL XPS 420, which currently boasts an ATI Radeon HD3200 with no dedicated memory - it shares system memory.

GPU has yet to arrive but I wanted to download the beta so that i would be good to go when the GPU arrives.

Started it up on my ancient machine. Worked fine.

I haven't had much time to play around with it - downloaded overnight so I popped in this morning briefly before leaving for work. So I have not ventured into anything other than the docking tutorial, it may yet struggle during combat etc., but bottom line I am surprised a modern game like this will run on such an ancient system.

so to anyone who is thinking of upgrading/replacing a machine to play this (as I was) - there appears to be no need. Try it on your existing one first.

Anyway I spent years playing Elite daily as a teenager on my BBC, really looking forward to this. I only really stopped because there was just no progress left available to me. Great to see the space station this morning before I left for work in full textures instead of a wire frame.

Here's a quick vid of me, erm, dying: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TAgkfN3Wo5M
It also shows the new escape vector in place when under interdiction, oh, and how to be a noob on a hotas setup:-)
(only had it an hour or so)

Nice video, was going to ask what you used to record it but see you mention MSI. What sort of video editing tool do you use to add text etc?

I'm just got back into 3.0.3 after an OS reinstall - I like how they've darkened the background colour of space to proper black, was a bit too blue before. I have 550k credits since the wipe and debating what to spend it on. Really love how the Eagle handles so I'm thinking maybe going back to that and maybe get a Viper too - haven't flown one of them yet.

Saitek X52 pro HOTAS and GTX 970 GPU were both separately delivered today from different suppliers.

My wife has a book club night tonight so I will have an uninterrupted evening in front of computer, with new stick and new graphics card, on this new game I started playing last night. But a new game I spent hundreds (thousands??) of hours playing in the 80s.

I made 17k on delivery missions last night after going through the tutorials, i got lucky with a 10k payout to deliver 2 coffee, which was for sale in a system which i had arrived in to lodge a delivery. With the new stick i might actually engage in some combat rather than deliveries this evening :)

I have a grin on my face from ear to ear. :)

Last night using the mouse and keyboard I was wishing i could just pilot it with keyboard only like I had done in the original:

    < roll left
    > roll right
    ? slow
    s pitch up
    x pitch down
    [space] accelerate

Is anyone sucessfully playing this with an Oculus Rift yet?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,084 ✭✭✭✭Kirby

Not possible to "play" it properly. You can surely mess around with it but the resolution is too low. When the retail version goes 1440p, it will be a little better.

Some games are fine with the DK2 but high detail stuff like space sims and movies aren't good enough. I watched Gravity and Avatar with mine and it just isn't there.

So I made it to 70k credits or so last night. I did the combat tutorials up to killing the sidewinder after "advanced" combat.

But I took on a wanted NPC in game on the basis of his rating as "novice" without giving enough respect to the fact that his cobra was a much more powerful ship, I got his shields down and nibbled on his hull a bit but in the end he smashed me. In fact I just let him kill me because I could see eventually he would win the war of attrition and i got sick of wearing down his shields and then having them charge up again before i could do any substantive hull damage.

Now when I get home this evening my choice will be: Hauler or Eagle next?

I am thinking Hauler, selling the single laser and running with my tail between my legs if I find myself in combat. Is that the best approach? I have had very little combat outside the tutorials so far, one or two ships have escaped from me, that cobra killed me and I have zero kills. On the other hand I found myself wishing for more cargo space often enough.

If I get the hauler should I try mining to raise money, "trucking" or continue doing BB cargo missions? Which will earn cash fastest to get to the next upgrade?

    I figure path will be: sidewinder -> hauler -> cobra-> lakon 6? -> asp.

The asp looks like a great all rounder.

Does anyone know when the next wipe will be? 22 November?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,374 ✭✭✭Glebee

Think so. I loath to put to much effort into it before then. Im just messing about as much as possible. My advice is that if you feel like trying out the hauler with no weapon, go for it.

That's not true for most people. The majority of us cannot go back to using a monitor after using the DK2 despite the low resolution. The sense of immersion and scale you get when flying near a sun or space station cannot be matched by a monitor.
