Any big issues with these cars that anyone knows of or are they quite reliable?

That engine is used in a multitude of different cars across various manufacturers. A lot of horror stories out there but also stories of high mileage examples running fine. I had a Ford Focus with that engine that never gave me any grief but also had a Volvo S40 with the same engine that nearly always needed money spent on it. Ideally you need to find a well cared for and maintained example otherwise it has the potential to break your heart.
