Yes, she was in the Family as Tony's, er Charlo's, daughter!!

The family was some series. Absolutely terrifying. Can't believe its 20yrs ago. I'd love to watch it again

She was also in Intermission, she worked in the supermarket with Cillian Murphy

The Conroy's are a talented family for sure. Ruaidhrí is a fine actor but it would seem both do more stage work.

Do comparisons to Sopranos and the Wire really look that ridiculous after episodes such as last nights? Season 2 and 3 were excellent. Season 4 was pretty mediocre, but this season has already produced two whopper episodes, and I'm pretty sure episode 5 and 6 will make that figure 4!

I haven't watched the sopranos and the wire so I can't exactly be objective here, but are comparisons to the sopranos and wire 'ridiculous', or is 'not as good' a fairer wording?

It was a great series and should be shown again. Like Love/Hate showed the whole drug dealer lifestyle, The Family did the same for domestic abuse often the fallout from the drugs trade. Both series are mirror images of each other and shared some of the same actors as well. Notably, Sean McGinley who was excellent as Charlo and Tony respectively.

the best way to go would be to watch both and then you can decide which you liked best ;)

Very off topic I know but Roddy Doyles 'the woman who walked into doors' is an amazing read. I never understood (thankfully) how anyone would stay in an abusive relationship. That book made me understand it.

Impossible to compare due to the difference in the amount of episodes of each series. The Wire is another level though. True Detective or the corner could be used as a mini series comparison and both are another level when compared with Love Hate. This doesn't mean it isn't excellent, it is, just not as excellent as the above two.

Its fair to suggest that the Wire and Breaking Bad operate on a far better playing field in terms of having the freedom and funds and long term commitment in place to do whatever they please. Love/hate gets a hammering in quarters for not being as good which is akin to expecting a an ambitious championship team to be as good as Barcelona or Real Madrid. Now Love/hate operate at a pretty high standard given the variables they have to work with

The book was actually based on the TV series/characters of "Family".

my personal favourite is Breaking Bad, but all four of them are great TV

Is this true? Usually, the series airs from October-November and for 2 series, November to December.

They have never aired two new series in the one year.
Usually they re-run the previous year's episodes in the run up to the new series.
Filming is usually at the start of the year (Feb -Mar) with screening later in the year.

As I said, it is readily available if you missed something. I feel that some posters are going out of their way to look stupid by asking questions about simple plot points. Maybe to make themselves look a bit more endearing or cute to the others on here. Community spirit if you will.

Cute and endearing............. Jeez man you are thinking about this too much! Maybe some dont follow it but dip in! Its not your obligation to be so informed about it! They may be simple things to some but others who only take a passing occasional interesf arent going to be so informed!! ....... Cute and endearing :-D

I think series 5 is excellent. Patrick/Paddy Ward is my favourite character outside of Nidge, Fran and all the usuals. From a minor character in series 2, he has become in series 4 a seemingly minor enemy of Nidge's who I had predicted would either be dead in series 4 episode 6 or at the very start of the series 5. Instead, he has become the most interesting rival of Nidge's since Dano. Now that Fran has also become an enemy of Nidge's, the it will be interesting to see Nidge use Noelie and Fran the travellers to wage war against each other.

I liked season 4 and can appreciate what was being set up in its last 2 episodes. So far, I would put the series in this order:

Season 3: every episode had something and especially episodes 1 and 6. Plus it had a great climax. The best parts involved Nidge v Dano. Everything that we expect from L/H was here: violence, betrayals, the death of a major character, gangsters, terrorists, and drugs.
Season 5: So far, season 5 is neck and neck with season 3 and could well overtake it. Each of the 4 episodes were interesting and the best parts involve Nidge v Fran and the travellers. Episodes 5 and 6 will likewise be excellent I am sure.
Season 4: Controversial I know to put ahead of season 2, but I liked this season a lot. The best parts involved Nidge v Dano and the emergence of season 5 favourite Patrick/Paddy Ward. The climax came in episode 4 with episode 6 feeling more like a filler midpoint episode.
Season 2: A very good solid series with a lot of gang warfare. A vital season for storylines in seasons 4 and 5 too. Best parts included the war between Fran and John Boy which is the roots of what we are watching in season 5. Like season 4, season 2 had a damp squib finale that set things up for the excellent season 3 opener.
Season 1: A very good start. Best bits included the exciting finale where Darren was shot and the general rivalry between Darren and Hughie. Not enough Nidge, no Fran either. A classic finale cliffhanger with Darren's life in the balance.

Just on the prison locations. All interior shots are in Kilmainham Gaol, with the exception of the visits and screening areas which are Wheatfield. There are also exterior shots of Mountjoy too. The prison is portrayed as the joy to the viewer. Oh and where Aido and Nadine drove out of was also Wheatfield.

    Nidge can read and write.
Does nobody remember when he was getting concerned about his receding hairline and he was on his lap top doing research on baldness.
Another time he was researching how to take down, clean and re-assemble a glock.

and he also likes to update his Bebo page, a prominent story in season 1..! Jesus nidge was a very different person back then.

so are we to take it that he missed with every shot after firing the full clip?

I wouldn't think that's what we should take from it no. Could be wrong I suppose.

But how can Patrick know that the guy has no information? You're telling me that a shooter who is sent to kill someone and then fails has ZERO information about what he was sent to do? The gun, the accomplice, the car, the place where he was approached, the time frame, the getaway plan, phone numbers, places where they met to discuss the hit etc etc. I can't believe I am actually having to explain this.

Patrick wasn't to know what this lade knew or did not know. Any normal man who has just avoided death, and who is in a running and deadly feud with another gang surely would try and get something from the man who pulled the trigger.

He asked him why he turned on one of his own for the other fella (Nidge) The answer he got told him everything he needed to know.

What was a lying junkie going to be able to tell him realistically? Patrick knows who is after him, he knows why he is after him, he knows he can't trust anything your man is going to say anyway, since he is a lying junkie who is in Nidges debt.

Don't see what the problem is to be perfectly honest.

Nidge was more relaxed and easygoing back then for sure. In fact, he was the most balanced and in control character in it compared to the unhinged Hughie, torn between worlds Darren and gang boss John Boy.

But that's how things developed. He had little to worry him back then. John Boy had all the headaches. Nidge took over in series 2's end and has since series 3 had to contend with threats from Dano, the cops, the travellers and now Fran. He has become more paranoid than John Boy ever was and has landed himself in trouble due to this with Fran and the travellers in particular.

You're correct, when I said it's not Wheatfield I was referring to the scenes with the cells etc in the shots.

I know but its too convenient just for nidge too suddenly hang around outside aidos house and see your man coming out.

Dont think he was intentionally there hanging out, he knocked into the house looking for Aido and when his mrs (cant think of her name) answered the door he thought she was acting strange and knew she was up to something so he hung around to see what and thats when he seen him coming out

So the prision scenes are shot at 3 different prisons don't tell that to the zoo garda station guy...
How are any real life criminals meant to find it realistic pathetic from the director

one point about the attempt on Patrick's life is that Nidge and his allies knew that Patrick wears a bullet proof vest (after the failed attempt), so you'd expect Aido to have mentioned this fact to the hitman

He did, he said when he goes to ground shoot him twice in the head as he will be wearing a vest.
