Passat 1.6 FSI?

Hi all. Thinking of looking at an 07 Passat 1.6FSI Estate. Has reasonably low mileage on it (about 85k I think). Dealer wants 7k for it.

I know folks say the diesel engine is better, but I don't do enough miles to warrant a diesel engine plus the cost to fuel and run it. Just need a nice safe, first family car.

It looks tidy and is from a dealer so would have warranty. What should I look out for if I go to look at it?

Passats of that vintage can suffer from a number of issues. Most common issues include the electronic parking brake which in most cases is the switch itself and not an expensive fix. Another common problem would be the steering rack which works out a lot more expensive if it has to be replaced. The 1.6 FSi engine was only around for about 5 years and they are not very common so it's tough to know what common problems they suffer from.

Price wise €7k is a bit strong as there is a private sale for a similar car with similar mileage on carzone asking €5500. Now you are not going to buy a car from a dealer for the same money as a private sale but if the car checks out and there is a decent warranty with it then see if you can negotiate down that price.

I have a saloon one, also 07. Beyond normal servicing I've had the handbrake button replaced, somewhere in the region of 20-40 quid I think it was, and contacts cleaned for the passenger airbag igniter I think it was after I got the airbag warning light, and also the boot latch replaced but I can't remember the price of that. I've been getting 35mpg out of most tanks, but that's with 4 lads in the car daily dublin to athlone at an indicated 140-ish kph. At 120 that is up at 40mpg.

I've had the car 2.5 years and have put 70k km on it. After the first service I got done in Foster Motors on one of their specials George Dalton has looked after it, and if you do buy I'd recommend him for servicing as he's great priced and knows what he's doing, which didn't strike me about Fosters.

Cheers all for the sage advice. Ended up buying the car today. It appeared to be in excellent condition inside and out, minus the odd scuff and very light scratch here and there.

Got a couple of quid off the sticker price, 2/3 of a tank of fuel, a good bit of warranty and a great trade in price for our old car.

The car appeared to drive very well. Nice and smooth and handled all bumps in the road with ease. We don't do a lot of miles apart from the odd run up to Malin Head a couple of times a year, so the petrol I think was the right choice. It appears to have everything in place paperwork-wise too.

So far very pleased. We got to bring it home today too. Hopefully this will prove to be a very safe, sensible and reliable car for my wife and I, the dog in the boot and our new arrival due in the new year. Just hope I haven't cursed it all now by saying that! :)
