Peoples' names were on their numbers last year, not sure if it's the same this year.

Not on them but there is a facility at the expo to get it printed on for no extra cost.

I was hearing something at the club last night about the numbering system changing to a first-come-first-served basis, so your number is printed out on the spot. Is that correct?

Didn't know that, wonder would they allow a different name to be printed?
I have a cousin who is dying of cancer at the moment,he'll be in my thoughts anyway on Monday but it'd be nice to carry his name on my chest.

I heard this too, but on my original email in March I was given Race Number 749. On the confirmation email last week I was also given Race Number 749. I'll be very surprised if my bib number is not 749!

    From the Race Office:

"The names will not be printed on the race number when you get them as the numbers are only being assigned when you come in. There will be a facility there to have your name printed on your number. "

that's interesting about the race numbers only assigned as you come in because I run with a club and one of the details I had to submit when entering a team in the marathon (it is the National Marathon after all) was race number which I assumed was the number quoted in the confirmation email from DCM when I registered.

Oh yeah, the other thing being discussed was how this would make life difficult
for our club coach in getting teams organised.

Might be different for teams and members.

There was no race number in my confirmation mail.
I checked with AAI, you just leave the race number bit of the team entry form blank, they sort that out when they get the entrants list from the marathon

Can anyone tell me what my 'Race Number 749' is referring to then?

Simple pace band that I knocked together, just pop your target time in the yellow cell.

Are they the last 3 digits on your barcode by any chance?
I don't seem to have any race number on my slip. I presume as usual it will be assigned when I go in but I wonder does the barcode contain it?

No. Not on the barcode in any shape or form. I reckon the first 1000 were assigned their number on registration. That's my theory anyway. If I don't get bib number 749, I'll admit I was wrong :D

    Anyways, back to the weather.

Looks like it's getting a bit warmer. Wind speed still low though. Nice and cloudy too.

fnck me. Good job I had a random look on the DCM website. For some reason I had assumed that the start time was 10 a.m. That would've been embarrassing.

Just don't turn your clock back on Saturday night and 10am it is ;)

At the Human race in Limerick at registration they scanned your confirmation email barcode. They then took the next Bib Number from the stack that they had on their desk and scanned the barcode on it. That was how they allocated a number to you in Limerick anyway.

Is this your first ever race? Anyone I know how is capable of running 2:45 in the marathon would already have enough experience of racing and training to be able to answer those questions themselves. Have you done any long runs? Did you need to apply vaseline then (and where did you need it)? Have you ran up a hill before (and did you crap yourself when you ran up it)?

Sorry if the above comes off as negative but if your are going to run 2:45 you have to have belief in your training and preparation.

Happy with training and simply looking for some practical advice. There's really no need for the attitude there. Thanks to everyone else.

    Any update on elite field?
I think Setanta are filming so likely to be highlights on in days after race, per DM FB page

First time marathoner and I've a few questions - cheers for the info.

    1. How long before the gun should I get to my pen? I hope to finish in 2.45ish and am hope to be no more than 10 rows back from the front. With about 4,000 people in wave one (based on last years finishing times) it's going to be jammers.

    2. Has anyone had any negative effects on running from taking imodium? My bowels plan to fill my pants at the the sight of the Clonskeagh hills (just did a mini poo at the thought ).

    3. Any gear related advice? For instance, today someone told me to stick my name on my top, to get personalized encouragement from the crowd, which I thought was a good idea. [What about vaseline - where to apply? I'm thinking of taping over my nipples...what tape is the best?

Any other useful advice, that I may not have thought of, would be appreciated, thanks all.

Have you run any races before?

Are you actually planning to take imodium to stop yourself from pooing during the race?

Do you normally have to use Vaseline or tape?

Surely you have done long runs before and would therefore know stuff like how likely you are to need to poo during the race?

Surely you have also done runs long enough to know where you might need vaseline and how much?

Where are the best spots on the course for atmosphere for spectators? The finish is an obvious one but might take in a few different spots. Also how easy will it be to get from one point to another? I assume Dublin Bus will be pretty much shut down for the morning.

Glad that your training is going well, you are going for a very impressive time, and i wish you the best for it.
i think looking for practical advice is good, a friend mentioned to me a few days ago that he was told if he took 2 ibrofon's 10 minutes before the start and two more in the middle would be great

I looked at him and said..if you haven't tested it by now , you shouldn't test it on the day of the marathon..what if it goes wrong. you need to test these on one of your long runs!

so if you havent tested taking imodium before a race...don't.. unless of course you know your own body! and your willing to take a chance
if your running that fast..you wont even notice the hills..

if you havent used vaseline in the areas necessary..then i am surprised..i have a few times forgot to put vaseline on for long runs and suffered for it!
if you watched the Amsterdam marathon on Sunday, this male athlete finished with the leading lady in around 2:26, he had the worst nipple bleed i have seen and even the commentator said it also. horrendous.

i think the comments that you refer to were made in a good humour. normally a 2:45 athlete would be well prepared and also considering you would be at a different level to me and a lot on this forum..i am a 3:30 man and happy to stick at that level!!
if this is your first. you obviously are a very talented runner and will improve given time.
good luck and repost after with your time. i certainly would be interested in your time
    Good luck

You could head to Phoenix park, see people enter the park, then head down to Chapelizod gate and see them heading back out. Then maybe Luas up to Dolphins Barn for the halfway point and then back into town for the finish.

Another option is to start at Stephens Green for the start and then Luas to Milltown which is around mile 20 (maybe head up to the hill at Roebuck road) and then back to the finish.

I wouldn't be relying on Dublin bus anyway.

My gf is taking bike between a few points. e.g. Start line to Heuston then cutting across to Terenure, down to UCD, down to Ballsbridge

LUAS is a better option, you can get to Milltown (around mile 18) on the Green line and back in.
Red line would bring you to Heuston and Rialto, but the course runs over the line at Heuston so I presume the line is closed for a few hours

Thanks for that and apologies if I came across ratty. Experiencing pre-race foul temper! Started running this time last year and was bitten by the bug. Have not raced much, hence the post. Put in some good training this year though and ran two halfs (Dublin HM in 1.17).

I have had problems pooing on long runs and have shat more times in the park than the average deer! Haven't taken Imodium during training as I didn't want the couple day back-up the follows to interfere with subsequent runs. I will be nervous before the race, which will make maters worse. Definitely planning on taking one and just wondering if anyone else has. I've read on some running blogs that it does not interfere with the running.

I've had minor chaffing on the inside leg on some long runs, but didn't bother with Vaseline. Haven't run 26 miles flat out though so it may be a different story. Bought a singlet the other day (not worn one before) which I haven't used on a long run (I know). Should probably tape the nips to be on the safe side.

Sure, will update the table post race and link to Strava. Best of luck in the race.
