Apparently alot of devices decide to go on fire and destroy the premises.

Tv went up in smoke. Nothing to do with the candle I left on it and fell asleep :(

Years ago (over 8) a friend of mine got married. I brought a Samsung camera that was a few weeks old. I was keeping it in my shirt pocket for handiness, but it slightly stung me towards the end of the night so I just held it.

The following morning, I was due to go to Rome for my sister's wedding. As I was packing, at 2.30am, I noticed a burning smell. The batteries in the camera had overloaded and a sizeable chunk of the camera had melted.

Melted plastic isn't a nice aroma.

Most definitely, they're deathtraps! I even saw one with a counterfeit plug that didn't meet the BS1363 standards. It had an insulator on the earth pin (it should only be on the live and neutral), which meant that in most sockets, the earth was useless as the insulated part of the pin was what made contact in the socket! Most have feck all weight in them, which makes you wonder what is in them?

Many chargers don't have an earth and nor are required to do so, so an insulated earth pin is acceptable.
The reason why they have "feck all" weight in them is because they are switch mode and don't use a transformer.

Compare them to the real thing which is significantly heavier.

I'm not talking about fully insulated earth pins, this is a partially insulated one which does not meet safety standards. And yes, the vast majority of laptop PSUs have earth connections.

Many PSUs and chargers don't have earths. I can't see how a partially insulated earth pin would be detrimental in this instance.

Those cheap-ass, knock-off laptop chargers people buy off Ebay are an absolute menace.

They think they're saving a bargain spending €10 on one when the piece of shít will either die within a few months, melt / burn the DC jack, fry the laptop, or just decide to spit out sparks for the craíc and burn the outlet it's plugged into.

I suppose I shouldn't complain, those chargers do bring me good business from all the damage they do :pac:

I've seen some teardown videos on youtube comparing cheep Chinese rip off chargers bought off ebay and EU/CE regulation chargers....scary.

Ever have a near miss with something electrical?

You know in a light socket, you have two prongs? Well, it fits a pre-adolescent's fingers perfectly. sticking two figers in to a light socket results in fun times. I'm now 35 so must have learned from my mistakes!

I was enquiring about that online before but I couldn't determine online if it was merely a myth or not

    Is it definitely a fact?

I'll never juggle chainsaws again. I physically can't now.

Were they plugged in at the time, or are the non-electric chainsaws easier to juggle ?

When I was very small, I pulled the lead out from the back of the stereo (one of the standard detachable ones).

I plugged it in, and put the other end into my mouth.

I immediately realised what a huge mistake I made as the electricity consumed my face!!

Yep, I done exactly the same thing. Seen blue flashes across my eyes and then the RCD went.

My mum bought a new dishwasher last week because the old ond kept tripping the switch. When the new one was fitted it also tripped the switch, turns out the spring was weak in the switch and the old dishwasher was perfect.

Theyre unlikely to work if they are on Fire

One type of sky box was a hazzard and caused fires, it was a top venting one and the problem was people stack boxes or put magazines etc on top of them and they used over heat.
    They are side venting now.

I know, this thread is making me seriously paranoid!

    Same as you.

Had an open fire on tonight, on the ground part of the fireplace I had jars of candles burning. Well, surprisingly, the fire got very hot. The candle wax turned to liquid, put the candle flame out, and remembered that glass can go on fire if it gets too hot.

I'm actually terrified about being burned alive since the charger

This thread is a real eye opener though. Any clap of thunder atall and my father is around the house making sure everything is plugged out, but i'll be the same as him now...just every day!

He always says to me "make sure to plug your phone charger out, you dont want to be burnt in the bed do ya"
Jesus why does he have to say it like that!!

My folks are the same, plugging out everything except the fridge, the fridge is ok to be left plugged in for some reason. Is your father the same?

Yeah, everything but the fridge! We'd have to turn off all the lights too, just to be safe. Sitting in the quiet, dark house listening to the rain and counting the seconds between the thunder and lightning for entertainment!

Steel and iron can also melt if they get very hot. Around the same temperature as glass, actually. There's about as much chance of your candle melting a glass container as there is your microwave oven causing a nuclear meltdown.

Though I will add that glass can crack before it melts.
