School reunions

It will be twenty five years ago next summer (ah Italia 90) since our class left school. Now by coincidence someone found our class of 1990 leaving cert group photo and posted it on Facebook the other night. It's going viral (through Fb word of mouth as it were). So the talk is a reunion next summer to mark the quarter century. Part of me is up for it (we were a rowdy boisterous bunch but no scumbag nasty element more so high jinks). The other part fears it may be a damp squib. So any good or bad experiences to share on school reunions. Or should the past just stay in the past?

Most of the lads I went to school are a pack of **** and the ones I wanted to be friends with, I have kept friends.

Do these actually happen in Ireland?

It's just a cock measuring contest, but instead of cocks being measured it's your careers being measured.

Yeah, they're pretty much events where everyone has 2-3 children and some middle management job at most.

I was invited to my tenth year of class 2003 last year, needless to say I didn't go. It's just a blow holing contest. Since I finished school ten years ago 5 people from my class are already dead ffs. Depressing.

I imagine many are bet down by life and bitter, all the hope and optimism of youth extinguished.

    Did by leaving in 2001.

Think I have only seen 5/6 of class since then in passing.

    None in last 7 years.

haven't even been bothered to do some FB nosing around.

My old school closed down a couple of years ago, so there will probably never be a reunion. Not that I mind - it would amount to little more than a depressing visual representation of the ageing process.

When do you start having these things? It will be 10 years since I finished school next year, can't see myself going to any kind of reunions though. Not so long ago I met one of my good friends from school accidentally on my flight, she was my air hostess, we chatted for a bit, it was fun to catch up but neither of us pretended we'd keep in touch or anything, just said see ya. She also said I made her feel inadequate, I guess she assumed I had some expectation of what she'd be doing but it wouldn't have even entered into my head, I'd imagine reunions are a whole host of awkwardness like that

Reminds me of the school reunion scene on Miranda. When her old school friend asks what she does now and she replies "I'm Myleen Klass":)

I was very much a loner in school and only ever kept in touch with one person.
However there was a 25 yr reunion as part of the schools 75th anniversary a few years ago. About 10 people from my class turned up. it was hilarious! Had a really good time. Apart from 1 person, I wouldn't care if I saw any of the rest ever again.
Am definately glad I went though.

I was disgusted at my last one with the amount of shifting and roiding that went on......

Especially since I went to an all girls school!

I would rather never see a single one of those utter sods ever again. Worst years of my life were in school.

On the other hand, I'd happily go to any number of college class reunions.

I ran into a former teacher of mine a few weeks back. Was chatting away and she asked what year I did my leaving cert in, I said 2006 and her reaction was "Oh you've your 10 year reunion coming up soon so!". I really hadn't thought it was a formally done thing tbh, and I seriously doubt I'll go. It's not like 40 years ago where people moved out, had no mobile phones or internet and lost contact with people. We all had social media accounts before we even left school, anyone we had any interest in keeping in touch with we could do so easily. I know what they're all doing from their facebook accounts (in an edited form, but no more edited than the story you'd get at a school reunion).

It seems like these things are like going backwards by 10 years. To me, that goes against the natural order of things - people move forward in life and move on. I really can't see how anyone secure and happy in their life would see the need to move back 10 or 20 years. Weird.

I need to start fabricating my CV and saving up for the rental on the sports car and matching escort or I won't win best of show.

Fella sitting in my work a few months back, called me over and he obviously knew I hadn't a notion who he was, said his name and I still drew a blank. In fairness he was in my year but probably not in many of my classes, I finally remembered him (after he named his brother who I knew better), but I wouldn't have recognised him without his help. Its only 17 yrs since I done the LC but seen I'm useless at remembering people, I'm guessing a reunion would be a whole lot of "who are you again?", "OH of course its you" walk away thinking, who the fúck was that:confused:.

im roughly same gone from school;)

do you not find it a bit boring/too much effort staying in touch all this time later??

    Never been to one myself

I'd honestly probably only go if I thought I was finally successful enough/got better looking enough to ride one of the girls that thought she was too cool for me back in the day. But as I went to an all boys school that isn't happening.

My school has a past pupils union that have events, gone to a few here and there with my mates from school, but all I ever do is stick with my mates at them, I imagine a reunion would be the same, only with a feeling that you have to prove something to everyone you haven't seen since leaving. Not my idea of fun.

Got roped into one a few years back and my experience was actually the opposite. When you're a teenager, you're a bit of a judgemental cnut and amplify differences with your peers based on trivial things like music and subculture but the night was actually a laugh and meeting everybody again as adults was quite interesting. What was interesting was seeing everybody out of their box that they were put in back then, Like quiet people who were overlooked somewhat in the school environment actually being interesting and sound people. Or macho types who had become pretty nice family guys.

Not saying you'd be mates forever but it was a enjoyable night.

I suppose what I was saying is that we were all connected on social media before leaving school, we're still all connected on social media. If I want to know what someone's doing, all I have to do is find them in my "friends" list.

Whether I want to be in regular contact with them is a different matter ;) And not that difficult if I'm still friends with them! But that would be only one or two of them in honesty.

We've had a good few over the 36 years it's been since we left school in 1978. Two this year and another one coming up early in the new year. Maybe the fact that we were boarders means that we knew each other better and were closer even when we may not have got on or didn't particularly like each other back then. Now while I might not want to spend a lot of time with some of them I can see them for being nice, genuine women. There isn't any of that oneupmanship or showing off that so many see to fear. There is a lot of support and appreciation offered and received.

That is what I'd be hoping for.

Didn't bother going to mine don't see the point of them.
Seen the photos of mine age has wearied us,and the awkwardness of asking people what they are doing now when you never or couldn't give a fiddlers fcuk about them.
