Doing ok. Have a chesty cold / cough at moment so am leaving off running. Don't want to risk getting any worse !

Other than that legs are creaking a bit but should make the start line - 4:20 ish target.

    20th October

A easy 4 miles yesterday, Got a sore throat two days ago and convinced myself it was going to be the full blown flu. So went out to convince my self it was nothing a bit of taper madness I guess, got a bit of tightness on the left leg don't think it's anything probably from tapering but will be keeping my eye on it.

With DCM a week away the plan is simple I'm in wave 2 so target is under 4 hours so going around 9min/mile and if I'm good by 20 miles mark I'll push on. If I have to slow down I will I will love to get under four hours but I can run other marathons so it's not the main goal.

    (1) The aim to to finish the race
    (2) Run the full race
    (3) Under 4 hours

Pity you can't get the Tuesday off too:(
Will it matter if you can't walk very well when you wake up Tuesday morning? :D
Hope your job doesn't involve much standing/walking!

Went to the expo today, didn't hang around for long as I did not want to spend ages on my legs.

The plan for the race is 9min/mile until mile 15 and push If I can.

I will be taking a sports with me I have space for two bottles but will need just one as I can pop a bottle from the course into it. As for gels I will take one every 5 miles. Hopefully this will work on the day.

The other half decided to come support me with my daughter as well so I'm delighted with that it's only for the finish but probably where I need it the most. Going to bring two protein drinks with me and two bars as well for after the race.

I see your A goal is under 4 hours. No expert here of course but going to say this anyway :)

How close are you fitness wise to this ? At 9 min pace you would be on for 3:55 and would be taking on the harder half of the course a lot faster than you need to to get in under 4. Experienced consensus seems to be that there is 2-5 minutes to be made up on the second half for same effort. (Hills and predicted wind direction) Are you risking blowing up at 9 min miles or would you be aiming for a low 3:50s ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,687 ✭✭✭Darren 83

Secretly yes would love to hit 3:55, any of the paced runs I did where between 9:00 to 8:50 and kept below my target. I know the first part will be harder and the wind will be behind me for the second half so hoping to use that and gain a bit of time.

Nothing is written in stone if I have to drop back I will, plan A is too Finish

    Dublin Marathon 2014

I got up at half four actually had a decent nights sleep before a race, Had everything set the night before.
Left the house at 6 for the bus stop just realized I forgot my watch too late to go back. What could I do I just changed the plan and go with 4 hours pacers no big deal.

In Dublin at half seven and already there was a great buzz about the place we grouped at Mount Clare Hotel which I have to say where very accommodating to all runners letting us use toilets and half strip at reception fair play.

Drop my bag and got into my wave last min pit stop and lined up a little behind 4hr pacers but no problem, off we went I didn't attempt to push to the pacers, the race was nearly over at mile 3 stood on a bottle and nearly slipped. At mile 4 was with the pacers and stayed there a few from the club was there so joined them. Some chap slipped and fell at mile 5 felt sorry for him. The support going upthe phoenix park was brilliant.

    10k Mark
    00:56:38

Hit the 10k point on target about 100 meters ahead on the pacers, really amazed by the amount of people out supporting the race. At this stage the sun was out and could really feel it taking water on at every station. Hit mile 10 and took another gel.

    Half Marathon Mark
    02:00:01

Past the half way mark and still on target unfortunately shortly after this I started to cramp after this no amount of stretching would over come it, So new what had to be done I slowed the pace it was all about finishing the race time had no importance seeing people in the back off a ambulance really set this plan in concrete by mile 17 seen a few more in medic tents felt sorry for them. Enjoyed the crowds they where absolutely fantastic.

    The Finish line

The last mile was nothing I ever experienced before every one cheering me one as If I was the first one to the finish line, I just enjoyed the last few meters past the finish line in 4:40:30 I did it.

Sitting on some steps the other half said am I disappointed with my time my response was "I never finished a race and missed my target and was happy about it"

A few from the club said never again, would I do it again I would do it just for the support alone.

Going to build up to five days running going to looking into this cramping issue has happened before but first some well deserved rest...

God I dunno how you and some of the others managed to go to work the next day! Fair play to you!
Great to hear the legs are good. I think you're right to wait another few days to make sure.
I loved that line you used about never being so happy not to reach your target in a race. Says a lot...:)
Believe me I will enjoy that shopping trip to AK A LOT!!! And thank you too:)

What will you concentrate on for the rest of the year and what are your thoughts on doing another marathon next year/year after?

I might do next years DCM but for the moment I want to increase my weekly miles to 35-40 as I think I'm just not use to the higher miles and get cramped up because of it. Will be aiming to improve my 5k, 10k and half marathon times next year and maybe a chunk off my marathon time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,687 ✭✭✭Darren 83

I had a great week and a half off from training made the most of it as I'm in a different group so might take a few weeks to get into it. I wont be training with the club for another week at least.

I have been reading Advanced Marathon by P&D so I can follow one the plans in the book next year, I'm not 100% if I will do it. I will be spending the next 5-6 months with the club with the intention of targeting Bohermeen Half in March, I will use this result to work out pace for a marathon if I do it.

The clubs plan is about 25 miles for the week so will do a recovery/easy run extra to up the mileage.

    6th November

    4 miles easy

I could not wait to get back out training and what a day for it pissing out of it but I was not going to let it stop me. Just let the legs dictate the pace for the duration of the run.

    Distance: 4.05 mi
    Time: 36:52
    Avg Pace: 9:07 min/mi
    Elevation Gain: 171 ft

    9th November

    5 miles lsr

Set out to do about 50 odd mins but as I've moved up a group the pace has changed so I will be doing about 6 miles at this pace and go up 10% each Sunday as it is a quicker pace than I'm use to.

    Distance: 5.01 mi
    Time: 46:59
    Avg Pace: 9:23 min/mi
    Elevation Gain: 128 ft

    Hey Darren
Just wondering how the training is going?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,687 ✭✭✭Darren 83

I picked up a bit of an injury in mid November, ran into a pothole (it was at night) a few days later could hardly walk but kept icing and rest so with work being busy and all didn't get a lot done bar eat around me. The leg has been well rested and have done a few easy runs since nothing worth logging. Before the injury I was about 11st and now I'm a even 12st so will be working on that as well.

    29th December
    Recovery Run

    Distance: 3.24 mi
    Time: 32:51
    Avg Pace: 10:08 min/mi
    Elevation Gain: 97 ft
    Calories: 403 C

A nice easy run after yesterdays lsr, I was constantly watching my footing avoiding any ice patches as on Sunday nearly fell going across a bridge but luckily grabbed a hold of the railings on the bridge.

    30th December

    4 miles @ 8:20pace with 1 mile cool down

    Distance: 5.01 mi
    Time: 42:49
    Avg Pace: 8:33 min
    Elevation Gain: 155 ft
    Calories: 612 C

Club starts training on the 6th so needed to get a speed session done and see how much the fitness suffered as a result. Stuck to the roads as they were not as covered in ice, Definitely felt the fitness dropped but managed the 4 miles.

    Mile Splits
    1: 8:07 A bit too fast
    2: 8:23 More like it
    3: 8:30
    4: 8:29
    5: 9:16 Cool down

So 806.88 miles done this year not a huge jump forward from last year (683 miles) but progress has been made, really happy with this year delighted with my first marathon, getting a pb in 5k and half marathon. Looking forward to next year and getting a few pb along the way. I have an idea of next targets nothing decided yet.

Hope every one has a great new year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,687 ✭✭✭Darren 83

    1st January

    5 miles @ 8:30 pace

    1: 8:25
    2: 8:30
    3: 8:23
    4: 8:17
    5: 8:35

    .26 mile cool down

This was a hard session with rain and wind pounding against me, I was not to happy with the last mile but was going up hill so not to annoyed about it.

So targets this year will be

    5k

    Target 20min PB 21:57

    10k

    Target 43min. PB. 46:40

    Half marathon

    Target 1:44 PB 1:47:46

No plan to do a full marathon this year, really want to concentrate on the shorter distances.

Great to see you back logging and training consistently again.
Well done with all you've achieved in 2014! No doubt you'll hit all those 2015 targets too. Enjoy!
