Sounds like it's wedged on very tightly. Any chance it's a reverse thread?

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 30,661 Mod ✭✭✭✭Faith

Nope, it's got arrows on it for the directions to turn. I just fecking wedged the thing, it seems!

/edit: I did it! I put it back on the electrical base and just used sheer force. Thanks, DB!!

SO, reading around you can make chicken stock in a slow cooker. Will it be a bit weedy though? I thought part of the flavour concentration came from evaporation, or am I wrong?

Having made gallons of marmalade and god only knows what else since getting an induction hob 2 years ago, I just found the 'power boil' function... and obviously it speeds things up considerably! Yep, sometimes it pays to read the manual :D

I've made stock in the slow cooker a couple of times and it's not great. I think you get a better stock from more heat and a good simmer for a few hours.

It's thanksgiving here in Canada today! I'm going all out to make a feast for us, as it's our first one. Roast chicken (there's only the 2 of us, so no way we're getting a turkey!), mashed potatoes, roasted carrots, candied yams (minus the marshmallows), homemade cranberry sauce, cornbread and gravy. Followed by pumpkin pie and ice cream :D

    Have a good one, Faith!

Please tell me the marshmallow reference is some joke!!! People don't honestly do that do they?! A pet hate of mine is sweet/savoury food, I like sweet elements to stick to the dessert trolley! Even the thought of pork with something like apple sauce makes me want to hurl so the thought of marshmallows and sweet potato makes me come over all unnecessary!

Not joking in the slightest! :D

I'm just going to bake some sweet potato with cinnamon and a sprinkle of brown sugar. I'm quite happy with a savoury/sweet combo (in fact, it's my favourite combination!) but even for me, the marshmallows are too far.

My daughter has Canadian friends and she's tasted sweet potato mash with marshmallows. She says it's strangely nice!

    Happy Thanksgiving Faith :)

It's a seriously subdued affair here, compared to America. It's officially today, but people celebrate it whatever day of the weekend they feel like. So yesterday was busy around the place, but today is completely dead. I'll have to pop below the border for America's Thanksgiving :D

Salty/sweet is my all-time favourite flavour combo. I have a notion that's down to a pretty unrefined (ignorant?!) palate but I had my fun and that's all that matters.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,057 ✭✭✭MissFlitworth

That's funny iwantmydinner, I was just about to post exactly that! I did used to hate sweet & salty and really hated sweet elements in savoury meals but something flipped in my head (probably prediabetes :D ) and now I do love that combination. I think I could do sweet potatoes & marshmallows!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,041 ✭✭✭✭the beer revolu

I also love sweet and salty.
I really like fruit based sauces - rhubarb with duck being a favourite. Gooseberry is great with savoury as is redcurrant. All the above have quite a bit of acid too, though so I guess I really like sweet salty sour combo - in balance.

Mrs Beer thinks I'm a freak for it but I love honey and marmite together!

I don't think sweet potato and marshmallows would be a very nice texture...

Funny you should mention the acidic elements there beer, I'm obsessed with acidic things, particularly citrus flavours, but not when it comes to a salty/sweet combo. Noooo thanks.

    Fascinating

This I have to try :)

Should we be chasing you away from here to recover or are you back in typing form?

I could see them as a toasted topping on softer mashed or roasted sweet potatoes. Small marshmallows though, not big pink & white ones, and sprinkled over the top then under a hot grill or into the oven. Hmmm.

It's particularly good on multiseed ryvita with a little butter:)

I'm posting on my phone. It's sitting at the computer is a no no (like I did the other day).
I think it's going to be a while before I'm back in typing form :(

I'll be trying that soon! Ryvita, cream cheese & marmite has long been a favourite, time to up my game.

Your injury sounds like zero fun. Hope recovery moves at a decent pace for you

Mrs Billy always puts marmalade on her toast when having a boiled or poached egg. Not something that I would be in to at all.

My sis was always a great one for marmalade & cheese on crackers. Bleurghhh!

However, I do like honey with certain types of cheese.

I wonder if anyone has got any creative tips for this problem I'm having? I have a blender - a typical one with a glass jug and a blade that sit on a rubber seal in the plastic base. Somehow I've pretty much welded the jug onto the base and I can't separate them. I've tried brute force, freezing it, heating it - nothing. I put it in the dishwasher after use, but I'm still thinking of the gunk that must be accumulating around the seal at the bottom. Any advice as to how to separate them for cleaning?
Only just seen this ... once you manage to release it, the seals usually will come out for washing if you poke around the edge of them with something pointy.

I have a work mate who puts a spoon of marmalade onto his boiled egg when he cracks the top! I don't think I'm ready for that just yet.

Oh god I just can't stomach marmalade. There's really very little I won't eat, but that's one thing.
