Great natter with the eldest last night; a vegetarian and occasional Buddhist who for reasons that still baffle me decided to go to an all girls Catholic secondary school. During a surprise mass, she decided to go up and get one of the Eucharists to see what they tasted like. I reminded her that it was just as well she wasn't a Catholic, because if she was it would have turned into the body of Christ when eaten, and hence as a meat product violated her vegetarian principles. She then noted that it was just as well one of her friends was a Catholic, as the untransubstantiated Jesus most probably wasn't gluten free, which was a big no-no for this friend. I doubt the nuns would have been amused.

    Oh?

There were radio spots on Newstalk and a heap of non national stations,
I listen to Newstalk for half my working day and never heard it mentioned once before.
there were 10,000 flyers given out in Dublin,
I work on Pearse St./GCD and never seen one.
there were 10 paid advertisements in publications,
I haven't bought a newspaper since Kate Fitzgerald passed away and the times slated her.
There were 1,000 posters put up the week before in Dublin city, as well as daily up dates on the abortionrights.ie site, twitter, Facebook and the social media for doctors, for choice, Nwci.
I haven't seen one poster, and I heard nothing on Facebook or Twitter (fair enough I am not avid users of either), I also am not a doctor
and the banner has in my sig for the last 3 weeks.
Signatures never come up when I look at boards
So as none of that reached, you what would have?
Well since some of what is mentioned above was not heard or seen by me, probably nothing. Like I said, RTE was the first I heard. IMO it was poorly promoted. It may not have seemed that way if you were actively involved but to those who are not as active in these campaigns it certainly seemed so. My brother in law works only 5 minutes walk from where it went on, he didn't even notice it had happened.

I am pro choice but I have to hand it to the anti choice brigade, they do word of mouth and promotion better. I knew about their protest weeks in advance. I would have come in if I had known it was on, that was my point.

If people don't use fb or twitter or G+ or don't want to have connection to pro choice stuff in those places which I respect, then if you wish you can get a monthly newsletter directly to your inbox, email infor@abortionrights.ie to be signed up to it.

The other side have the parish networks to use and they have a lot of money to spend running buses and buying ipads to raffle off and to take out expensive advertisements, which a grass roots org which is not yet 2 years old doesn't have.

It's a massive learning curve there are no full time staff, there are no consultants employed to help create the media campaigns. It's people giving what time and skills they have voluntary to make this happen. So happy to hear feed back and will try and pass it on.

Have there been any threads with a discussion on this over the years can anyone recall? It's a topic/argument I'd like to read more about.

Ach, I have looked before on google and YouTube but anything I've come across has been so partisan one way or the other as to be fairly unwatchable and hard to credit.

I know if there was a thread on here it would come with a lot of info with creditable sources attached.

The topic has come up a few times. There was this thread on the historicity of Jesus in 2013, and this one in 2009 and this one in 2007, but the topic as also been discussed in some of the more sprawling thread not specifically devoted to the question.

"Historicity of Jesus" is a phrase that you might usefully Google, this being the usual academic shorthand for the debate. The first hit will be a Wikipedia article on that topic. The article, while it suffers from the same vulnerability to partisan edits as every other Wikipedia article, at least give a reasonable overview of the range of opinions among scholars on the question.

I think it's fair to say that the view that Jesus of Nazareth never existed at all finds little academic support. The bulk of scholars of the period accept that he did exist; the real debate is about how much of what is said about him in the sources is historically dependable. (E.g. he was probably not born in Bethlehem. On the other hand, his mother probably was called Mary, and he did have a brother called James. That kind of thing.)

And in no way was it a criticism, I was actually impressed by the sheer numbers considering my ignorance of the event before hand.

    I appreciate the feedback, honest!
It's going to be an annual event every year for as long as it takes.
It will always be the Saturday closest to the 28th September which is international decriminalize abortion day, and I am going to stop now before the mods give out to me for pimping :D

There was a historicity of Jesus thread, where Bannashide pwned anybody careless enough to claim that there was any actual evidence for Jesus' existence, more so than that for Gaius Iulius Caesar for example. A quick boardsie search should bring it up.

Here in the real world, Bannasidhe believes Jesus to be a historical figure and, since her beliefs are evidence-based, presumably the inference is that she considers that there is evidence pointing to his existence, and that she finds that evidence persuasive.

She points out that there are no primary sources for his existence, but (a) she is pushing at an open door here; very few people claim there are any primary sources for the existence of Jesus, and (b) exactly the same could be said of many figures from the ancient world whose historicity is not disputed, such as Socrates and Alexander the Great. As Bannasidhe's own belief with respect to Jesus of Nazareth shows, the absence of primary sources for a particular figure does not, in itself, suggest that the figure is not a historical figure. Realistically, if Jesus of Nazareth lived the life, and had the career, outlined in the gospels, what primary evidence would you expect to find?

She also points out that evidence for the existence of Jesus is not evidence for his divinity. And this, I think, points to the real area of controversy.

The most recent article linked above refutes the claim of existence. Just saying.

    Is this a first?

A religious leader says that he's ok with the idea there mightn't be another one after him.

Or, rephrasing what the Dalai Lama said, "its been an interesting career, but once I'm dead I don't care too much what happens to the business. I hope it struggles on, but I'm not overly optimistic, because obviously there is nobody out there who is talented enough to replace me".
    Same old $hit, different CEO.

Some careful person has colorized a selection of monochrome photos, rather well too, I have to say:

these things just make me uneasy; partly because the first time i saw the link the photos were described as 'historical'. not any more they're not.

anyway, a friend sent me this too:

Good article on how the (US) publics understanding of science, does not accurately reflect how well they understand the scientific method, how science actually works, and what scientists really do - also touches on how even genius scientists themselves can suffer cognitive dissonance, that sets them on a dead-end scientifically:

Hitchhikers' Guide to the Galaxy - 30th Anniversary Edition online game!

    No. Way.

Aaaarrghhh! I was so frustrated by this, aged 13!! Especially as I hadn't read the book. Wow. Me and the younger bro spent WEEKS figuring out that blasted babel fish in the ear and the towel I kept forgetting to pick up. Jaysus, I'd put that bit in a spoiler, but I don't seem to have the option (as a new user?). Although I'm an old user.

I'll do a re-reg confession here, as I can't put it in a sig for all to see till I hit 50 posts (again). Howdeedoodeedoo ye all. Artist formally known as Obliq here, hope yous are all well and good ;-)

Didn't leave for long, and I had faded out gradually anyway. However, closed my account in a fit of "I'll never waste time on here again" and have since regretted it.

Are you WAAY too young to have ever tried the game above? Boy am I feeling old. At the time we were a high-tech family with a Commodore 64 though. Give it a go and see how much it wrecks your head ;-)

Same. Well, I got no further than the house being bulldozed for a fly-over, got 10 points out of a possible 400 (lying toads) and one award. The pictures are confusing me - they weren't there in my day. Was there a cup?! And the new "save" feature isn't working. Hmm. Not sure I have my 13 yr old patience for this ;-)

I've never played a text adventure before so far I've only managed to stand up and I'm already in a murderous rage. I don't seem to be able to put anything in a way it understands.

    Hey Obliq,
While you were gone nothing happened. Then, after a second or so, nothing continued to happen.

    So welcome back.
