I think this could help a lot of people so might stickie.

Immigration New Zealand's Skills Shortage List 2014:

    Long Term
    Immediate
    Canterbury

In a nutshell, these are areas where New Zealand is lacking in people, and will consider you to apply for a work visa.

There are many ways to apply so you've got to dig deeper to find the category that suits you, or get professional advice.

My job is listed on the skills short list, does this mean I would be able to obtain a visa easier than if it wasn't? It hardly guarantees you work does it? Hopeful thinking :)

It Improve s your chances of getting a work permit, you'll have more points to get through the initial batch of selected applicants. It would also suggest there aren't enough kiwis to fill the industry demands

Okay thanks a million for that :) think you need a job offer before you can apply for the visa!

Is a job or job offer a requirement even if you meet the points quota without one?

Not if you're applying for a 1 year working holiday visa.

How would you go about getting a job offer? be hard to have a job offer before leaving Ireland I'd image! My job is on the list for the Auckland area but haven't really seen any jobs around there advertised! Just looking a different websites as not too sure how else to go about it.

Could you come down on a working holiday visa for a year to interview and suss out the market in person? Then once you have a job offer begin the process for getting a longer term permit via the skills shortage list stream.
