I know that Stena do a sail & rail ticket using the Harwich-Hook of Holland route, which covers through connections to anywhere in the Netherlands, but does anyone know if any of the other lines do something similar?

DFDS also sails from England to Netherlands but doesnt seem to do a deal all in one including rail fare.

Trains in the Netherlands though arent all that dear. Its only €25 for an on the spot ticket to get from Hook of Holland to the other end of the country to Maastricht which is a 3 hour journey.

If you're heading to Germany and aren't stuck on the sailing part DB have special London- Germany fares

Thanks scheming . . . I think I'll give that a go. I'm just in Garrett Fitzgerald mode at the moment working out possible timings, routings, etc . . .

In terms of value it's going to be hard to beat that.

It looks like all the €59 tickets involve an overnight in Brussels & an early start the next morning. Not unmanageable, but I'll have to price that in t othe equation.

A night in Brussels enjoying the moules and some Trappist beers.
    There's worse options!

I ended up booking the €59 overnight fare in the end. Actually, the €109 1st class fare. If my cunning plan works, the extra €50 will get me a glass of wine and cold snacks on the evening Eurostar to Brussels (saving me €10-€15 on food in London). I think the ICE from Brussels to Koln is crummy on the catering front if it exists at all. I delayed the departure from Koln so I have 1h30 to kill. I reckon I'll get a free breakfast in Koln in the DB lounge (again saving me ~€10). And then when I get to Berlin I'll check in to the lounge again and (if the 1st class lounge in Munich is anything to go by) I'll grab a quick sambo, soup & a little something fizzy (saving me €10-€15 again). I reckon the €50 is worth it, apart from the extra space on the train.

Munchkin - I'm not the biggest fan of moules, but I do like frites & beer, so I think I'll go with your suggestion. The only gotcha will be the 0625 departure from Brussels, but I reckon that a combination of various alarms set really loud will get me up in time. I tried moving it to the 1025 departure, but that made the price shoot up by ~€100 or so.

Meantime (related to my other thread), I'm meeting Mrs Zag in Berlin and getting the sleeper back to Paris after a night or two in Berlin at the Christmas markets.
