I'll be trying out the preview releases and will almost certainly go for the cheap upgrade price if they do similar deals to the ones when 8 was released. I figure if part of the day job revolves around understanding it well enough to support it, might as well get started on it as soon as possible...

And there are also irritants for the techies. E.g the old Ctrl-Alt-Del, three fingered salute, has been changed so it takes a roundabout authentication route, which can take minutes to respond. So have to google to discover Ctrl-Shift-ESC as a workable alternative.

The only NT-based OS that ever brought up Task Manager directly via Ctrl+Alt+Del was XP (assuming the Welcome screen was enabled and the PC wasn't on a domain). Every version before and after brought up the Windows Security dialogue. So XP was actually the oddball.

Back on topic, I'll certainly be giving it a go! :)

I also like Windows 8 but only with a start menu replacement. There are lots, Start8 is ok, I prefer www.pokki.com - but there are others if you google.

How anyone uses it with without a start menu replacementis beyond me. Whoever in Microsoft decided they should abandon the start menu and use metro should be fired. Technology should get easier to use, not way more difficult

It showed how completely out of touch they were with the needs of their general customer. I would bet that they wont make the same mistake with Windows 9.

I personally don't have any issue with the Metro start screen. I just removed whatever I didn't want and pinned my own stuff. I really like the context menu in the Start button too.

In its orignal guise in Windows 8 I thought it was dreadful but the changes made in 8.1 and Update 1 made it tolerable for me. It doesn't impede me anymore.

    sticking to Windows 7 :D

Windows 7 is the new XP, it will probably stick around for years longer than it should.

I got Windows 8 when it came out. Overall I was very happy with it. Then, a couple of months ago OneDrive started acting up (Not syncing, chewing up my CPU, constantly crashing), after trying every solution I could to fix the problem, I've decided to re-install Windows 7. I'm staring at the install screen right now.

I have to say though, until I hit this snag, I was happy with Windows 8. I was very surprised to realise that I never really missed the Start Menu at all.

Its already looking that way alright. Arent Microsoft ending mainstream support for 7 early next year? Bit harsh on companies that have just upgraded from XP to 7 this year.

I would have to agree with you!
I was a loyal supporter of Windows 7 until I installed Windows 8 pro then upgraded to Windows 8.1 I had this Windows 8 pro licence from the the launch "cost that time was just €15.00" and only installed it this week as a duel boot with Windows 7 and for the last few days I am finding Windows 8.1 a really good OS,it boots up twice as fast as Windows 7,and I find the whole OS more streamlined, the search is very handy also, over all a really good experience.

I use the start menu now the same way I did in 7: with the keyboard. Been doing it since vista. Why people were so attached to the old NT/XP start menu folder trees I will never understand. That was archaic.

I just upgraded to Windows 8.1 a few weeks ago and am absolutely loving it

I bought Windows 8 on release day, installed it, then unistalled and went back to Windows 7 Ultimate as it wasn't really suitable for use on a non-touchscreen PC

Windows 8.1 has fixed almost all of the problems with the original release. I normally use desktop mode and it seems a bit faster than Windows 7, if I need something from Metro I can just go to it very quickly, run the app and be back in desktop mode

The start menu in the leaked images of Windows 9 looks really good and is a true evolution of the start menu that has been used since Windows 95

Hopefully, Microsoft will have a consumer preview program this time and will allow us to see the new OS running on our own computers as soon as possible

word on the wire is Windows 9 won't be "Windows 9" and will probably be a rebrand with a shift in Microsoft mentality.

To that end, other rumors are coming in that Windows 9 will be a free upgrade to the Windows 8/8.1 License.

    Press conference is tomorrow.

Just looking at the vids in your link Zascar.
It sounds cliche to say it, but it really is what windows 8 should have been.

Also, looks so similar that it realistically could have been windows 8.2, but I feel MS wanna run away from that name fast :D

I've ran every beta version of windows since XP, so I too will be looking for a link should anyone find it!

Same here from Vista on-wards, looking forward to testing it, I might run it in a virtual machine.

Soo... noone's going to Windows 9 then? Microsoft's skipping the number.

    Woo innovation.
At least winRT applications can run in a normal window.
Might actually try to write something using it now.

So ... you can tile windows as in Windows 2.0.

    Yay.

A quick "features" video from MS

In the vid, he mentions the below site to sign up for the tech preview

    http://preview.windows.com

Sign up is not live yet, but should be live tomorrow according to the verge.

Of course the tech preview is only recommended for advanced users only :P

Going to Windows 10 seems like perfect fodder for The Onion, to be honest.
