IIRC, France transitioned to its Fifth Republic when it gave up its North African colonies in the 1960s.

No, fifth. I messed up in my last post, Vichy isn't numbered in the republic system, because as a Nazi client state it didn't adopt the parliamentary or any other democratic or quasi-democratic system.

Funny how the libertarian mob just seem to drive by this thread and throw out random accusations and never stick around to back them up.

If you one really wants to discuss libertarianism, then I suggest to open up a thread or contribute to one that is already created in the political theory forum which is a neutral setting. Everyone knows where it is.

I'm just going to assume that 'neutral' meant the poster demographic.

Posters can indeed go there but I hope they don't. I'd miss em. We'd miss them! We'd be all lonely here and no one to share with biscuits with. Plus no one crucify with our God-like Mod powers. Dictators have feelings too you know! :(

Just so we're clear, is Salon more or less lefty than Jezebel?

The thread went the typical way any thread about libertarianism goes. They are quick to throw mud, socialist, fascist, statist etc. But can't take any criticism. They will also point out the obvious issues with countries that have governments i.e. almost every country ever. When asked to explain how a libertarian country would be different or better though it is like pulling teeth and you won't get a reply. This is because it is so ridiculous. Ladies and gentlemen - no need for those kind of comments from either side.

I read that as 50 Cent's guide to libertarians and ended up being very disappointed. :(

Mod : Also this isn't the place for that type of goading.

Salon is lefty but I think Jezebel is lefty controvertialist. Am open to correction. Not in a kinky way though.

Isn't Jezebel more of a feminist website rather than a general catch-all left-wing site?

To misquote Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri:

Please don't go. The mods need you. They look down on you.

I'm sorry Bryan but that's not entirely accurate. It's more like Loki's ant and boot. Posters, the ants, have no quarrel with mods, the boots. Mods are sadistic boots that step on ants for fun. We don't look down on anybody; we squish them!

have we been explained yet why Somalia has not, in fact, turned into a libertarian paradise, and that this is to blame on governments and regulations?

I'll throw in a guess and say that Governments are to blame.

I'm guessing they don't count as the likes of al-Shabab count as governments. Somalia is more like an argument against anarchy rather than just libertarianism.

I'm not the only one here who saw Rand's acceptance of government aid as similar to Mother Teresa getting expensive cancer treatment, am I?

Did mother Teresa spend her life calling those who use government services moochers?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,165 ✭✭✭✭PopePalpatine

Nope, but she believed that a painful illness brought someone "closer" to God.

No but she did spend quite a chunk of her career refusing to give proper health care to the poor of Calcutta. Said it "brought them closer to god" or some ****.

Honestly totally lost on this one you need to spell it out. No idea what Mother Teresa has to do with Ayn Rand.
