    bit of a story here
My friend collected all the original Euro coins for the original 12 countries on a wall chart from 1c to €2, even going so far as to calling Irish embassies in other countries looking for them pretending they were for his imaginary sons school project :D

Anyway his tenant has taken them and spent them so he is not happy and is demanding that he replace them and threatening to evict him over it, so my question is how much do you reckon the cost would be to replace them considering they were the 1st series?

not much, unless your friend wants uncirculated coin sets

+1 to what MasterSun said there; as the coins were likely taken from circulation they're not worth more than their face value really.

any idea where you could get the equivalent?

You could start with a set like this:
    http://www.adverts.ie/coins/2002-1-euro-coin-set/5066524

You're unlikely to find circulation coins of those dates now, but you may be able to get each countries year set, there are some dealer on Boards that may be able to help
