Just watched Mahan/Johnson foursome clearing stuff off the green before they chipped from off it. I thought that wasn't allowed

Any loose impediments on the green can be moved

Loose impediments can be moved anywhere as far as I know. Confusion arises with sand, on the green its defined as a loose impediment but off the green it isn't. McIlroy got penalised for cleaning sand off fringe a while back.

If your on the green you can brush away anything

if your off the green you can move anything not part of the natural ground, eg leaves feathers etc. You cannot move sand,soil,mud/clay
