I normally have a hot bath after my long runs, followed by a few Carlsberg and Crisps for Carb loading. Now there's dedication for you. ;)

I ran 1.32 for Charleville on Sunday so I should be on course for my target 3.30 after missing it on my first two attempts with 3.43 and 3.40. I ended up in the first aid tent after both these attempts, so another target is not to end up in a wheelchair or stretcher once I cross the line.

Ha ha, splitting my sides reading your post.....first aid tent x2 visits......the stuff of legend. Great stories for the pub with the mates! Hope u crack 3:30 this time, sounds as if you have the prepp work well and truly done.
I too have an aim not to end up in the first aid tent/on a stretcher/ wearing an oxygen mask :-) trying for a sub 4 hrs.....

    Cheers Smash & duke,
The first one was DCM 2012 when I had hyperthermia which I never knew was possible after running, and the 2nd was Cork 2013 when I was a bit pale and had trouble stringing two words together but I managed it an hour later calling a pint.

Anyone know if Martin Fagan is running Dublin? or what the make up of the elite field is like?

Good question, bizarrely a thread on letsrun.com was trending yesterday:

"Martin Fagan is back baby!!!! Runs 63:58 to win the Charleville International Half Marathon"

... and posed the same question.

My take would be: if he wants to run, then let him run in peace ... he's served his time, as long as he's clean now, yada, yada.

But seems the original doping offense casts a long shadow of suspicion.

Of course you can finish it.
Sure didn't a 32 stone man with no training finish it a few years ago...

A bit harsh there don't you think?! Of course he can do it. It won't be pleasant but he'll get around some way hopefully. He did say he hopes to be able to finish it and that's all he could hope for with the amount of training he's done. Best of luck to him!

Yes, of course you can finish it. Covering 42,195 metres in (a maximum of) 9 hours is not a tough task. Practically any adult is capable of it, barring a major physical disability. If anything, if you were to "put in the miles until then", you will have a lower chance of finishing it, since you have a strong possiblility of injuring yourself.

Since you've already registered, you might as well do it. And next time, start your research a minimum of 5 months out, not 5 weeks

I'd say it's possible but you'd want to be aiming to do it in no less than 5 hours and don't start off too quickly or the experience will be pretty horrendous in the latter stages.
Try and get at least 1 x 16-20 miler in,preferably the weekend after this.

Ya its definitely doable but why would ya bother? Unless you want to be one of those heroes that boasts that they did a Marathon without any training...

Cool. Not often word "heroic" gets thrown around these threads but if you accomplish this, that's what you'll be!

The key now is to really lash into the training- maybe do 21k three or four times a week until the big day. I would also completely drop carbs between now and the race.

Most of all just think of what you will have acheived and just how special you are... YOU CAN DO IT

    Mahalo keemosabe.

Edit: I'd also head out with the 3:40 pacers on the day, they'll get you round

Jeez where were you the other week when I posted asking was 6 weeks training enough having done the HM in 1:44 and a half Ironman. I was inundated by people saying my legs wouldn't make it. etc.

I'm sure you have a lot of base fitness from all your Ironmans etc, and I also suspect (based on no evidence but me and my husband and friends) that men may just have a bit more natural strength to help them push through on less training, but I wouldn't base too much on your half marathon time if you haven't done the endurance training.

I did last year's half about 7 minutes faster than you, and I'd done my marathon training pretty diligently up until September when I sprained my ankle. I tried to keep up fitness on the bike and got back to long runs about a month before the marathon, but even so I really struggled on the day. I got around in under 4 hours, but I was 9 minutes off my projected (revised-to-slower-after-ankle) time.

I'm sure you'll be able for it, because you sound like you've good general fitness, all I'm saying is don't get carried away because you had a good half marathon. Take it very easy and enjoy the day. Remember what they say -- in the marathon 13 miles isn't halfway, 20 miles is.

I'll be out cheering on the day! Best of luck!

Thanks a bunch, its my first so I will go off nice and slow and if its in me at the end I'll push on. I hope the ankle heals soon. :) Excited for it now.

I hope it's just that your sarcasm detector is turned off?
My point is that anyone can 'finish' a marathon; like the 32 stomne man who did it in 11 hours.
If you want to do yourself justice however you need to train for it properly.
