Chrome staining - How to remove ?

Hi folks,

this has well and truly beaten me. Any tips for removing the cloudy effect in attached images ? Audi A6 chrome window surround.

I'll guess as it's an Audi they are actually metal and not plastic??

I have unfortunately seen a couple of BMW lately which the chrome trim just could not be restored. I am no export on chrome finishes to be honest but the usual rules apply, start with the least aggressive product and work your way up.

Some I have brought back have been really hard work and have ended up using fairly aggressive compounds and polishes to restore them.

What have you tried so far, metal/chrome polish??

If you have tried the above then I would be testing out some regular paint polishes or compounds on them next (test a tiny area first but shouldn't be an issue). If that doesn't work, take them off and get them painted or dipped :-)

Best thing for it is to mask up the paint around the chrome.
Get a cup filled with coca cola, and a nice big piece of tin foil. Dip the foil into the cup and rub away.

VAG chrome has been rubbish for years, crazy they are still using such inferior stuff.

I had this kind of thing on the chrome trim on my 3 series as Mr. Detail mentioned. I used a dremmel and Autosol metal polish to remove it completely. It's slow and tedious work as you are using the edge of a 1.5 inch diameter polishing disc (from the black box if small bits that Aldi/Lidl often sell) but it has never returned.
