    I started work in july.

I have earned less than 10,036.

my first four payslips I was only charged usc 2%.

but my most recent payslip I was charged more than 2%. I queried it and payroll said it's apportioned over the course of a year rather than being a simple cut off? is that correct??

    Yes, it's 193 per week (10036/52).

Sure otherwise anyone with a full time regular job would gradually be getting poorer as the year goes on - paying 2% til they hit 10k, then 4% til they hit 16k and then 7% on every weeks wage after that. Christmas would be hard times...!

    so in essence

you pay 2% on the first 193. 4% on the next 115, and then 7% on everything over that?

And the reason I only paid 2% on all my paycheques so far was because I would have had 30 something weeks of 2% USC built up to use...? 3.86x30 something?

If the employer has registered you, Revenue will have instructed them what your USC bands are.

Normally they issue them cumulatively, so you SHOULDA have had30-something times 193 accumulated to the point where you started work, so unless you've earned more than 6.5k gross for the year to date (from all employment) then you probably are overpaying.

It may be the case that you are being taxed on a Week1 basis - this means instead of having the accumulated benefit of all those earlier weeks, each week is treated standalone. That might be it, but if the person who does the payroll is any good they should be able to explain it to you in 60 seconds.
