Bicycleinsurance.ie/ bike lock query

    Hi guys,

Just posting to see if any of you have experience with insuring your bike while at staying at college halls of residence?

I will be staying at the Trinity College halls of residence and bikes are not allowed into the rooms/ apartments as set down in the guidelines. Instead, there is a bike-rack available for residents.

I emailed bicycleinsurance.ie and they said that the bike has to be stored in a self-contained lockable private room in the halls of residence.

Does this mean that I cannot insure my bike with them? I'm guessing that if my bike was stolen while locked to a bike-rack at the college the claim would valid (with a bike lock that they deem valid) - It is a little confusing in this regard.

They are by far the cheapest insurance company and I want to know before I purchase a policy that my claim would valid, should I be unfortunate enough to have my bike stolen.

On another note, do any of you have experience with OnGuard Pitbull u-locks - Are they a good-quality lock or do they have any serious flaws that you've noted?

    Many thanks to you all.

You wouldn't be covered in that scenario.

Deffo not covered. It says it must be in a self contained private lockable room. Outside on a rack is not that.

Check your parents house insurance. Mine was covered by that and so was my laptop while in college. Might be an excess on it though.

Buy a really good lock, and read up how best to lock. If you can't get insurance, put the money you would have spent at the intervals you would have followed in a hard-to-access savings account (e.g. a thirty-day-notice account) until you have enough to replace the bike.

Just out of curiosity how much was the insurance with them?

I never knew my parents one but there was no addition to add my laptop and bicycle while at college. We have contents insurance in my grown up life now, I will check this evening what the price is. It also covers my bike and laptop upto 2,000grand (I think)both inside and outside of the house once locked up.

EDIT: It should be noted that the excess is either 250 or 350euro and the guy on the phone said the premium would jump by about 150 a year if a claim was put in.
