This is going back quite a while, I heard a short story the science fiction slot of BBC (radio 4?) sometime in the late 90s.

The gist of the story was - some space explorers had trouble with their ship and set down on surface of what appears to be some sort of artificially constructed space station. Unable to repair ship enough to leave, they explore station.

Through a series of daily reports, the estimate size of station keeps increasing & increasing, until finally they theorize that the station they're on is large enough to contain entire solar systems and planets within and probably encloses the entire universe - or something like that as I recall.

Anyone have any idea of what short story/novel this was based on ?

it's a while since i read it but it sounds like the concept was taken from Greg bear's Eon. A hollowed out asteroid that extends onwards inside due to a singularity or something that was placed in it. Good book
