Salary of an intern

Hi All,

I have an interview for an internship at a major healthcare multi national in Galway scheduled during the week for a company which has been subject to excellent online reviews.

Just wondering are all internships now part of Jobbridge??

It may seem like a stupid question but it didnt say that disgusting word "Jobbridge" in the job spec but I fear that it may still be a jobbridge scheme unfortunately given its close relationship with the word internship

I would love to join the company but the simple fact of the matter is that I just could not afford to join a Jobbridge scheme for 12 months as I simply cannot afford it due to car insurance, college debt, living away from home etc etc.

Eh... intern usually means work for free in return for experience.

If you get paid something that's a bonus...

Depends on the company, I work for a multinational in Galway who hire interns on 6/12 month contracts. They definitely get paid. Pretty sure it's better than minimum wage too.

On the other hand I worked for two multinationals where the interns didn't get paid.

It depends on the company. I have only worked in IT related internships but both internships were paid. Best bet would be to check with the recruiter that you're dealing with.

I did a 6 month internship- and got 50 Euro a week (which didn't even cover my bus fare).

At the time I thought it would be- however, it was a waste of my time and everyone else's time. The manager- who I was supposed to be working under- pretty much took it as an opportunity to take extra time off to play golf (I'm not joking). It was a technical type post- with specific deliverables- I pretty much did his work for him- and he submitted it as his own...... I also had a gang of Fás workers who reported to me- who were supposed to be working to him- and it ended up one hell of a messy situation. I've never allowed myself be put in a position like that ever again.........

You got both technical experience and management experience. That is fantastic.

For your later career, that sounds like invaluable experience, you should have paid them.

I wouldn't say not being paid is the usual. It's about 50/50 paid and unpaid, I'd say.

The multinational I work for pays interns around 25k a year, I think. certainly somewhere in the 23k-27k range. Not a medical company though, computers.

I work in a Galway Medical Multi-National. And I normally employ 2 interns per year (Usually 3rd year Students), we pay 25-30k depending on the role.
