I have a feeling this is the same boy. Story from 2007 when a boy of 7, Sait Canbullu, was bitten by a dog. If i am reading it correctly they are from a circus family.

Edit: they were not the owners of the dog. The judge said that the dog should be put down but the boys mother pleaded that it shouldn't.

They're not from a circus family, and are indeed from Sligo, there was a circus visiting close to where the family lived and the boy got bitten by one of the circus dogs, his mother pleaded for the dog not to be put down despite it biting her son.

Last I knew they we still living in Sligo, although going by the mother's maiden name.

Witnesses to the abduction I'd say. Every minute that goes by must be agony for his family. It doesn't beg thinking how they're feeling now.

It could be friends acting the mick, is what I think the poster is implying. I suppose it's plausible but unlikely IMO.

I agree. It is rare for the Gardaí to issue a CRI alert, they only do so when they believe the child is in danger.
Child Rescue Ireland Alert (CRI Alert) is a system that enables An Garda Síochána to seek the assistance of the public where a child has been abducted and there is a reasonable belief that there is an immediate and serious risk to the health or welfare of a child.

Has been any indication that there was an actual struggle to get him into the car or that he was threatened in anyway?
I mean I know the guy were wearing balaclavas or ski masks, but could be a case of the parental abduction where the young guy actually wanted to go with the other parent and the people who got him covered their identities from the public and CCTV cameras just in case?
I know they say abduction, but it could apply to him, since he is underage.

Can't edit my own post at the minute, but just wanted to say that the reason I say this is because its hard to believe something like this could happen in the afternoon in broad daylight where there was obviously witnesses nearby, and in a town not would not be exactly bustling in crime like this.

They said on the news tonight that witness reported a struggle and him screaming before he was forced into the car.

Absolutely dreadful story. I sincerely hope he is ok. I too thought of the possibility of a parental abduction at first because it was the only bearable explanation. I still hope it was something like that,as unlikely as it seems,it's the only situation I can think of that would have an outcome where he would be unhurt.

Why did it take so long for the alert?

Was about 8pm or so when Gardai sent out the alert.....too busy at a protest or seomthing?

    Oh man :(

Jesus, why did it take so long for the alert, when it all points to a possible dangerous abduction?
****ing scares me now to think they could do this practically in the centre of town in daylight, since if I remember correctly the road he was on would have been fairly near the main shopping street.

I think we really need a more robust alert response to these situations. Most of us are only hearing about it 12 hours after it's happened. If we had a system like the Amber Alert system in the US where a text is sent to every phone then everyone could have been on the lookout from 2pm. In a tiny country like Ireland we would have a genuine hope of ensuring this car didn't travel any road without someone taking note and reporting. There'd nearly be no chance of doing something like this and getting away with it which would be a powerful deterrent.
As it is whatever has gone on we can now be sure that car isn't still on the road and that hundreds of people passed it today and paid no heed because they didn't know.

We have signs on motorways but looking at them on tv tonight they just seemed to say "CRI Alert , turn on your radio" or something to that effect. If I saw CRI I wouldn't think missing child, I'd think road works or something.

I wonder if we could change the title of this thread to "Abducted boy" or "kidnapped". I think when most people see "missing " these days they think it's a local issue, not a country wide alert.

It's a good point. As sad as it is to say I'd worry some people might overlook the thread because unfortunately missing cases are quite common and are often stickied here.

It's a sad fact that in cases like this, the sentence above very likely correctly identifies the guilty man.

My intention wasn't to speculate by the way, just some information I knew about the family. Hope he's found safe.

More likely they didn't issue it until they had enough information for it to be worth issuing. Telling people a guy was pulled into a car in Wexford is not going to yield anything of benefit.

Agree with previous poster regarding the use of CRI. The last time I recall it being used was when the two young boys were taken by their father and subsequently killed and most people said the same thing - they saw the overhead roadsigns but didn't know what it meant.

    Time to use "amber alert".

Hope the kid is found safe.

I had to look up what CRI meant as well. I don't know why anyone thought an abbreviation would make sense for an alert system.

Also in this day and age sending a text to everyone in the country shouldn't be difficult and would potentially make such a big difference in cases like this.

    Posted on Garda facebook page:

"The authorities believe that Sait is with close relatives and hiding from the authorities. He is under the care of the hse and has left two different care homes as he didn't like them"

I hope that's true and he is okay.

The circumstances are strange, and not ideal wasting Garda time, but hope he is okay.

That was not posted by the Gardai. A Facebook user posted it under the comments. The CRI Alert remains active.

The cri had been stood down according to some radio station that is on. Now a missing person inquiry.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,637 ✭✭✭BMJD

Gardaí believe Sait got into a car in Wexford town of his own free will with organised criminals .

He was approached by two men wearing balaclavas or ski masks at the junction of High St and Rowe St at around 1.10pm.

Yesterday a Child Rescue Ireland alert had been issued, but gardaí say that the case has been reclassified as a missing persons."

    From rte.

News saying he was NOT abducted. Weird!!!

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

Well the CRI alert app shows the alert is not active and mentions him being a missing person

    They've just cancelled the alert.

They're using Twitter's official alert system but then posting links to Facebook?!

They should link directly to a Garda blog.
