Your taking a chance being 40k overdue to be honest.

Stheno, sorry to hear it. It's never nice to get your car completely break down on you. Keep strong!

You're right Wotz. I'm going to book her in in the next couple of weeks. Its just not worth chancing it, is it? Even if it is a bit of a banger.

Thing is, there is a chance it might have been changed before I got it but I doubt it as its not recorded in the service book.

What I done with my last car is just took the cover off and inspected it myself. Seemed fine to me anyway so I never got it changed.

Stheno: When was the water pump last changed? If the pump failed then it would have thrown the belt off as well.
Seriously though bad luck. I remember being in a similar situation to you many years ago whilst driving through Europe.
I was in an Alfa as well, I hadn't seen a fairly bit drop in the road surface and went over it at about 80kph.
Smacked the under carriage off the road. Stopped, got out and saw nothing wrong so I continued on my way.
A minute later the oil warning light comes on but I was in the middle of nowhere and thought that maybe the knock had fecked up a sensor.
A minute or so later (Stupid I know) the car just died.
Hours later a tow truck comes and brings it to the garage.. diagnosis? sump split. I had smacked the sump and cracked it and kept driving while the oil poured out.
Cost me an engine and eventually a turbo.

    .

Changed when the belt was done. Mechanic going to check it today but is fairly certain it is the belt and is going to see how much damage is done

Anybody have any dealings with Oliver Geoghean Motors in Galway or H&H Autos in Kinsale? They are looking at cars for me at the minute. Thanks

The auto leveler on my passenger side headlight has stopped working...I can hear it trying to lift the headlight and failing. I'd say one of the plastic gears has stripped itself...ugh

Cannonballers just ripped through the port tunnel.
Some noise in work, I had the window open of course!

    I'm sorry to hear that.
I think though that when you tried to restart it then even more damage will have been caused.
If it is the belt and the big ends are gone then a replacement engine would probably work out cheaper than the repair.

There's a 2.0 sitting in my donor gtv. It's not much use to me, as my gtv is cf1 and it's a cf2, the same as yours.
The belt was done 2 years ago, but it's been sitting up for a good while, and it's just a tippex receipt. However it does run mighty fine.

Sooooooooooo, went down to my mechanic this evening.

He hasn't stripped the engine, but reckons from the sheer sound of the car that the engine has been badly damaged and that there is valve/piston damage.

I'd a couple of small jobs (exhaust/clutch pedal cylinder) to do on the car, and noticed in the past few weeks that the gearstick was sticking occasionally and my mechanic brought that up also (last time he did the big service I had he noticed it but at the time I'd told him I was planning to upgrade in a few months)

So overall, after talking about it, it really does not seem worth it to replace the engine, get the valves and whatever else fixed, to drive the car and wait for the gearbox to go, along with fixing exhaust/clutch pedal.

In the short term, I'm going to buy something mega cheap to get me to and from work.

I was planning to upgrade in January so considering it economically, spending less than 1k on a car in the interim is probably the way to go.

Would be different had I the skills to fix the car myself, but I don't

I'm off to sligo tomorrow it seems, should be interesting to see how the 9-5 fairs up to that length of a journey

Thats a shame, we all know you loved your car. Some engines suffer more than others when a timing belt snaps.

Tis, and it was unlucky, but while I'm still quite ignorant (as in lacking of knowledge, not stupid) about cars compared to a lot of you guys, I learned loads in three years of gtv ownership. I also met/made loads of friends on here, got to drive a car I literally wanted from when I was about twenty, and passed on advice to people.

I've just said it over on the bangernomics thread, but between offers posted on here, and help offered privately, this place is a real community, I'm genuinely gobsmacked at how lovely many posters have been. Should I ever attend a beers/meet, I'll need to stand a round, I'm literally in shock at how people have gone out of their way offering help/suggestions.

All messing aside, and I know you love your car, but when thinking about a journey and one of your thoughts is "wonder if the car will make it" then it's time to get something else :o

In other news who would have thought an Alfa could get this far :p

Edit: sorry Stheno if it looks like I'm taking the piss, I'm really not :(
