That chap is a wholesaler but there's plenty of retailers in Dublin. Couple around Red Cow and more as you head towards Crumlin.

I may wander up that way one of the days! The tires on the car now are cracked to nothing, how they're holding air at all is beyond me

The golf got a bit of a going over tonight by my uncle who's a mechanic.
    He changed,
    Oil filter + oil,
    Air filter,
    Pollen filter,
    Brake pads front.

Then he gave it a full look over and couldn't find anything wrong which is suprising as this guy is shocking fussy when it comes to cars said it was like new underneath in terms of suspension and everything he also said the mileage must be genuine considering the condition so delighted with that bit of good news :)

The only issue and I've noticed this myself is when you turn on the ignition you get this motor running sound. My uncle recons it's coming from the back of the headlight or around that area. It's basically running all the time once the ignition is on. The noise itself isn't that loud you certainly wouldn't hear it with the engine running. Just a normal motor buzzing sound. So I'll have to figure that out but fairly minor and it been doing it for a few months never got worse or anything.

I meant to say in my post earlier, I was amazed to discover the M50 have a permanent rescue crew/s on standby.

They spotted me on camera and within fifteen minutes of me breaking down they were there wanting to tow me to safety

As I spent the entire of those fifteen minutes wondering how soon I'd be rear ended I was very grateful, and they were very kind :)

I was thinking. I'd go for a better car than a R32(well in Ireland with tax rate) with big engine if I had the money.

Tis the gtv, four months inside the 3 year interval and 4k miles under the limit, I was literally religious about knowing the schedule.

Waiting to talk to my mechanic tomorrow about it, but the recovery guy started it up and said "no compression there, it's the belt"

I know it sounds stupid, but I feel cheated, I kept within the limits, never chanced my arm, and if it is the belt, I'm just disgusted that even with the limits alfa recommend it might have snapped.

If I'd ****ed up or not bothered fine, but only a few weeks ago on here I was posting about how it was due a new timing belt in a few thousand miles.

If my mechanic tells me it's the belt tomorrow, I'll just scream. It's not the alternator as that was replaced six months ago, battery the same, don't think it's the gasket as weirdly I regularly check the engine temp and it never went up.

The car literally did a giant shudder in line with the noise/bang, then lost all power.

I've a stupid question here from an earlier post (sorry but I like to learn)

So basically the bottom/big end of the engine engages the valves to try and get the engine engaging?

So because it appears my belt stopped, when the big end/valves tried to get the engine to engage, they couldn't, and so I got the whining noise as the belt would not cause the engine to engage and turn?

Does that sound right? (assuming it is the belt that has failed?)

I know this sounds silly, but I compare car engines to grandfather clocks, the big end (pendulum) needs to swing, to engage with the small parts that keep the clock going if that makes sense to anyone.

In this case the pendulum swung and the small parts said they were sick/disabled and the car/clock stopped ticking? Sorry if I sound like an idiot.

That's different symtoms than when mine went. It was driving along and heard a woosh and then engine reved high and I just checked to see if it poped out of gear. As that is what would happen if you knocked it out of gear driving along at about 90km/h. And it was still in gear. Turns out timing belt went.

A crankshaft turns on the bottom. A camshaft(s) turns at the top. They have to turn in sync because the valves need to open at precise times, The camshadt (top) controls when valves open/close, and the crankshaft (bottom) controls the pistons pushing up and down in the cylinder. The timing belt/chain is that makes sure these turn at the correct ratio/timing.

If they don't and the belt snaps, then the pistons can go up and down but the valves won't open close correctly. So if the valves are open and the piston is pushing up and down the piston might hit the valve causing massive damage.

Some cars are "non interference" though and this means that even in the event of a broken belt there will be collision. I think Alfas though are an "interference" engine.
When you engage the starter, this turns the crankshaft (bottom) but no belt the camshaft(top) won't turn.

This is a very basic explanation, and thus is inaccurate in a lot of ways but in the hope of keeping it basic and clear for you to understand I have allowed myself some grace.

Also the only stupid question is the question not asked

I had just changed gear with a slight difficulty when it happened. No high revs, car felt like I was out of gear, started shuddering, slowed to a crawl and then I pulled in

Given that I've replaced the alternator/battery, and two weeks ago my mechanic pronounced the car to be in superb condition, I'm fairly certain the belt snapped

I was actually very upset/shocked when everything went wrong, it was a bit terrifying to be stuck on the hard shoulder like I was with nowhere to go for safety. I'm not sure I'd have confidence in the car in the future given that I've taken care of it (assuming it is the belt), it was horrid being stuck like that on the M50

Not necessarily at all, I jumped timing lately and bent four valves, done water pump, timing belt again and got head skimmed.

    All for €240.

Check it out first stheno, it doesn't mean all valves are gone, it might just need a few and a belt and off she goes :)

Alfa timing belt kit for the 2.0 is more than 245.
Not to mention, generally the big end bearings go 12k miles or so after the timing belt lets go, so it's recommended to replace them as well. It's a pricy repair sadly

Stheno I'm really sorry to hear about your gtv, especially when it's within the belt timelines. I'd be feeling fairly cheated as well

I'm holding out a bit of hope until I talk to my mechanic tomorrow, but I can't think of anything outside of the belt blowing that caused this. If it is the belt, I suspect my alfa love will go, god knows I minded that car

The kit alone is a about 420 and it's about two days labour to replace a belt.

That's very unlucky Stheno. I feel for you mate.

I've never changed a belt in my life and I've never had a problem. Current yoke is about 40k overdue. Might change it or keep chancing it. Its not too bad when you're driving bangers but a snap on a decent Motor like yours would be very hard to take, especially when you had it changed on time etc.

Your taking a chance being 40k overdue to be honest.

You're right Wotz. I'm going to book her in in the next couple of weeks. Its just not worth chancing it, is it? Even if it is a bit of a banger.

Thing is, there is a chance it might have been changed before I got it but I doubt it as its not recorded in the service book.
