    No Payne?

Payne is now IQ and more than likely will be involved in the Autumn internationals - maybe he's subject to the same sort of rationing of appearances as the regular internationals?

Edit: or he might just be injured, see below.

There seems to be a lot of confidence from.some on uafc that Wayne Smith has already been appointed.

Not sure why it hasn't been announced in that case.

Quite a coup for the northern province if so. /thornley101

Don't think it is Smith by the sounds of things.

And the usual reliable in-the-know on UAFC says to get excited.

    Time will tell I guess..

"Whenever I say exciting I really mean surprising with recent events in mind."

That's the latest on the new head coach.

Given the time pressure we are under I'd say he's a very realistic option.

Chris Farrell starts at 12 for Grenoble in their match against Oyonnax tomorrow.

In other fantastic news Pienaar was carried off the pitch today for the boks with a knee injury.

If he's out for a long time will we get an injury joker signing?

I'd sooner play Nick Williams at 9.

Heard that elsewhere too. Starting to sound likely.

I saw on Twitter that Scholes picked up an injury in the AIL today as well.

I doubt Ulster would be permitted a joker signing. They've a bloke in reserve who they've trusted multiple times, starting in the HEC who is also a capped Irish player. Heaney is a young guy who has been improving and was trusted with a few starts late last season.

I'd be surprised if Ulster were permitted to sign a joker and, if they were, it would surely be on the condition that it's someone who will sit on the bench as cover.

I'd be surprised that - if they asked - that they would be refused. Given the financial stakes of getting to the k.o. stages..........Ireland and Ulster could lose out by up to 1,000,000 Euro. Heaney is pretty mince. Marshall is mince but more in the mode of Speedy Gonzales Mince.

I suppose it depends on the injury. If he's gone for the season, it's a strong possibility. There's precedence there with ST when Payne ruptured his achilles.

However, if he's going to be back in 3-4 months I think it could be a long shot given he wouldn't really be there until late October anyway and then off on international duty again for autumn series.

  • Administrators Posts: 56,516 Admin ✭✭✭✭✭awec

Honestly, we have no hope if we are expected to play with Marshall and Heaney for months.

They aren't going to magically turn good.

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 18,712 Mod ✭✭✭✭CatFromHue

Pienaar was fairly average last season I thought so I think Marshall will be able to do the job grand.

How many games did Cullen miss when Leinster were allowed to sign Thorn? Two was it?

Maybe now when Ulster beat all about them PJ will get his dues from the media commentators.
