Congrats to all who got results today especially my daughter!, but I am trying to figure out something that everyone I talk to is confused about and they are all convinced they are right.... can you get an HONOUR in ordinary level or is an HONOUR an A, B, or C in Higher level??? I tried to look through this thread but its so long

Ah right, is that the answer so...honours is a b c in higher level only? or is that just your opinion?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 119 ✭✭pizzamad

An honour is technically a HL A B or C although many just count OL grades as honours. At my school awards it must be HL A B or C for an honour! :)

I read a lot of web pages and forums with people stating that they got so many honours in ordinary and higher level subjects but I couldn't find any definitive answer to what an honour is, it all seems to be down to opinion. But before I posted here I did agree with an honour should be in higher level and not just an a b or c in ordinary level. I'd love to find an official department of education answer to this.

Like I got an A in a OL subject so I count it as an honor but I dont actually think it is! It just sounds weird saying oh got all honors AND an A In OL :)

I never got honours in my exams back in the day (20 yrs ago) so an A in OL is great I think, so fair play to ya!

Yes I agree, A,B or C at Higher Level. I don't think that system is used any more though by the Dept of Education. It's just hung on in a lot of peoples minds.

We used to call 'honours' in pass papers red honours in ye olden days, but anyway, let them have their day. As long as they don't fall into the trap of thinking an A in the Junior means an A in the Leaving.

for my junior cert i got 3 a's and 8 b's. :( Pretty disappointed but if anything i am hungrier to be more successful in the leaving cert and learn from my mistakes. I have heard and have many examples of people who do great in the junior cert and end up doing not so good in their leaving and vice versa, so my advice would be too keep your focus and not get carried away by the results. An A in the junior cert does not mean an A in the leaving cert. I'm in ty, so im gonna enjoy this year and next year im gonna start studying from the word go. Can't wait :D

    English - B
    Irish - B
    Maths - A
    Geography - B
    French - A
    Business - B
    Woodwork - C
    Metalwork - B
    Science - B
    CSPE - A
    Religion - B

All higher level. Pretty happy considering I was confident I got no A's.

Well done to everyone who got their results. My brother got his 1A 7B 4C.
He is really disapointed with a C in maths and wants to appeal it how does he go about this ?
He has been an A&B student since first year.

The Principal will have a form for this.

I got a B in French and my teacher wants me to appeal, I'm flattered that he thinks I should have gotten an A but I don't see the point and I'm perfectly happy with the B. Also, my geography teacher expected 7 people to get As and not one of us did (even the guy that got 9 As and 1 B).
