I'm thinking of taking up membership at one of these two next few weeks, anybody experience of playing them in the winter time, temp greens or course closed ?

Was planning on playing a round at Edenderry next week, only seen it from the first tee, looks like a nice parkland, if a bit narrow off the tee. Good greens and fairways.

Do urself a favour join moyvalley or rathcore instead. Far superior courses

Never played either, even though I live not too far from either (go figure!) but both seem nice enough and haven't heard anything really bad about them. I'm a member in Castlebarna in Daingean. It's cheap, well maintained and a great atmosphere about the place. One you should consider too.

Advice when considering membership of anywhere is to drop in and let them know of your plans, they will almost certainly allow you to play the course free of charge to check it out. When you drop in you should get a feel about the place- is it welcoming, place well maintained etc... don't jump in too quick. Assess your options properly before you spend any money!

I've played both of those. Moyvalley is fine, but they are looking for.way too much considering the course was closed down and it's been bought debt free. I'd like to join it but the options are full payment upfront or 100 euro a month for 9 months. It's just not in my budget.

God lord that's the best one I have heard yet, you know I think you could be on to something there, your right it should be about €400 a year, what about rathcore how much do you think that should be a year?

Wow eoin. You're the real posterchild for " dont have money ? Dont play golf! "

Good luck with your choice original poster. I dont know much about either course except highfield beat us (athlone) in an interclub competition earlier this year ;)

Edenderry gc for me. Played both a number of times and its edenderry by far. Not sure what condition they are in but get a game on them and decide what's best for you, which has a better vibe and feel to you.

I played Highfield last year via some on-line coupon, think it was €8 and it was just about value for money, quite short at times. The clubhouse is very nice but it's not a course I would like to play as a home course, bit too agricultural of a feel.

Lol. I was a member in portarlington for 4 years and we went to Athlone a few times. Very welcoming course.

Rathcore, I'm not sure but it's an extra few kms from my house and there's a few holes where I might lose a ball.

So I suppose about 480 to allow for fuel.

    Relax eoin.

To be fair Eoin, whether you know it or not you do give off that vibe. But sure thanks for your input. I've played rathcore a few times and it's a lovely course. But as I mentioned before, I've a budget that I will stick to for next year and I will find somewhere that suits that budget.

I don't know whether you have kids and a home to pay for like I do, but when I look at my budget, I wouldn't take an extra 350 Euro out for membership when I could spend that on something more important.

Right lets get it right from here on out, you saying that moyvalley got bought with no debt so it should not be charging €850 a year for its membership ,that is a ridiculous statement, moyvalley, rathcore, naas, curragh, knightsbrook, royal Tara are a few courses in the Kildare/ Meath area that are fantastic value for money, if you personally can not afford there fee, join somewhere cheaper with lower standards, but don't be talking crap that € 850 is a bit steep or that their Yearly fee should be less cause it was closed for half a year an bought debt free, an as for the posterboy thing, as I said that's a stupid thing to say, none of my replies ever implied that no money= no golf, were did I say that

So that's interesting, how do you define value for money, and to be fair, if you wouldn't mind disclosing your own membership and status to demonstrate it's value vis a vis disposable income, as that's a pillar of "value for money", how often you play ect.

There was a thread here a while ago (a year maybe more) started by a lady who played highfied with her friend and had an absolutely awful time of it there with a group of lads who basically intimidated them off the course and no action was taken from what I recall.

I have played it twice I think. Once during the boom when the chalets and lodges etc had been launched and it seemed pretty impressive. I "think" I was there recently and apart from the gimmick of teeing off the roof there was very little else that made me remember it, from a golf course pespective.

Never played Edenderry. I did play Castle Barna though and I'd agree with Barna boy above. It's a cracking course and if its feasible would be a good option.

Value for money for me is a good challanging course, playable all year, no temp greens, no temp tee boxes, not plugging in the fair way an losing balls, good greens, I don't get too caught up in bunker condition, we live in Ireland not Portugal, there has to be some common sense when it comes to them, if I could only play the club match play, the medals and the other major comps, an what ever practice I could get in, I would happily pay €1000 a year for it, anything else even better, golf in good courses is not sustainable at the budget you are talking about, so your options are join a lower standard course an don't complain about it or other courses outside your budget.an if that golf goes out of my price range over the next decade so be it, because go a decade or two back an golf was expensive

Edenderry is a nice course but gets very wet even with small amounts of rain, have play Highfield a few times in societies and don't rate it at all.

As other have said Castle Barna is a good track any in my opinion superior to both of them
