Neil Young. One of the greatest songwriters ever. Still making great music after about 50 years in the music industry. Also, he's never afraid to do whatever he wants and doesn't care what anyone (including the fans) think.

    Absolute legend..love harvest moon.

Saying that, why do I find it hard to take canadians seriously :(

One of the things musically that really makes me smile is hearing a great female vocalist, attacking songs with passion & imprinting her personality on them. One who isn't obsessed with being "ladylike" but who can give a genuine elegance to their songs. In today's world of polished, media obsessed, auto tuned pop princesses that's something one doesn't see as often as one one would like.

Examples of what I mean would be singers like Joni Mitchell, Chrissie Hynde (of the Pretenders), Stevie Nicks & Erika Wennerstrom (of the wonderfully named "Heartless B@stards"), all guaranteed to make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up. Rock on sisters!

Yeah, can't imagine what you're thinking aboot with that one ;). For my money Harvest Moon isn't one of his best albums, though lots of people love it. I reckon his rockier, Crazy Horse stuff (particularly thinking of albums like Zuma, Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere & the live album Weld) is a lot better. It certainly seems to be what Neil himself prefers to perform these days. Still, different strokes for different folks & all that.

I sing a lot so any amazing vocalists (especially female ones) generally inspire me and make me really jealous. My current source of jealousy is Hannah Reid, the lead singer of London Grammar. Looking like her would be nice too, but I'd settle for her voice and job!

I'd also be inspired by Bruce Springsteen- all these years later and he's still so passionate about his music and his performances.

    The Who.

Anger & Intensity has never been as much fun. Throw in a dash if intelligence & we have a ragged sort of perfection.

    Brilliant!:D

    Joe Satriani and Mike Oldfield

as a guitarist, Oldfield especially as he can totally fluff solos, leve them on the finished track, and it still sounds great!

listen to In dulce Jubilo. there are several runs where he misses a load of notes and it's STILL wonderful!

There are another dozen who are not a waste of your time to listen to, and the academics might add Bach as the equal or even superior to this duo, but really, Mozart and Beethoven are where it begins and ends.
Depressing to think that it is a hundred and fifty years since there has been anyone new worth taking much notice of.

If I'm feeling particularly down, I just stick on Des'eree's Life and I feel inspired.
"I'm afraid of the dark, especially when I'm in a park and there's no one else around, ooh, I get the shivers

I don't want to see a ghost, it's a sight that I fear most I'd rather have a piece of toast and watch the evening news".
Says it all right there. Beautiful woman.

"The greatest lyrics of all time" is a phrase that gets bandied about way too casually... however, the above... is an exception.

    Hell yeh!
Kate Bush - a voice that just "lets go", locks out the world around her and occupies its own little universe.
Sexy and sensuous as bejaysus, without a hooker outfit in sight.
A fair-skinned Celtic maiden who transforms into some exotic, otherworldly queen.
Similar attributes in Sinead, PJ Harvey, Bjork, Tori Amos, and more currently, Natasha Khan (Bat For Lashes).
These all make me so glad I can sing. I love old-skool glamour too - Lana Del Rey is fantastic IMO.

Wonderful vocalist. Again, that soaring, raw quality. I only know the song Strong by them, but it's amazing.

Nas, Black Thought. Talib Kweli, Coltrane, Monk, Miles Davis, Jimi Hendrix to name a few. There's just something beautiful about the music black people make

Fairly sure a lot of it's projection, which is easy to do cos he's all mysterious and whathaveyou, but Burial's been very important for getting me through several pretty rough patches over the years. I basically talk about him as if he were Jesus Christ at this stage.

No Way Down by Air France got a very specific kind of happy vibe down that my first few listens just happened to coincide with what was probably the happiest patch of my life in years at that time, so it's always a good reminder that I'm capable of being that happy quite abruptly regardless of how things are going once I keep making the right decisions, etc

That last one was recorded on his living room floor, amazing. The man's a genius.

I also second Josh Homme. :D
