As a straightforward android box without love film and prime instant it's a great bargain IMO.

Would XBMC allow access to play content off a drive connected to the USB, or is this still restricted?

I've been able to watch prime films via a vpn without any issue.

Would this be of any actual use in ROI?

There's an App that you can put on it XBMC that is fantastic.

Can you not get an XMBC box for cheaper than that?

    What's the use?

Yes you can, but might not run XBMC as well as this.
I have had it on a few things now (PI, TV Stick, ATV2, OUYA) and the OUYA is the only one I'd rate, and the fire is meant to run it as good as the OUYA

Does this do much that I can't do with my Chromecast?

Ethernet for high bitrate video, USB for storage, keyboards etc, doesn't require another device to operate, nice remote. Hopefully they will hack the crap out of this and it will be the best xbmc box ever.

    Did anyone get one?

    Best XBMC device I've used.

If you're getting one but haven't turned it on yet and want to retain root permissions have a read of this. Too late for me unfortunately but you can still hack it plenty without root

Depends on your definition of normal but probably not.
It's quite locked down and the recent firmware updates are blocking root access. I believe USB access is possible without root but haven't tried yet. If you're not interested in the subscription services offered then the Amazon launcher is a nuisance and sideloaded apps a fair few clicks away with some hacking

So far I've installed XBMC through ADB and sideloaded a couple of utility apps like es explorer and Llama. I'm pretty sure both RTE Player and iPlayer can be sideloaded but haven't tried.

What I like about it is
      XBMC is very smooth.
The FTV slips snugly between my TV and it's mount up on the wall with no cables visible.
The excellent little remote works perfectly without needing line of sight to the FTV because it's now hidden behind the TV.
      It is very quiet.
I can leave XBMC and my TV on and both will go to sleep after the set period of inactivity.

The UK FTVs are shipping with the newer unrootable firmware so no point in trying to block the update.

Really excellent box overall, especially if purchased for £50. Use this Windows app to take the hardwork out of sideloading etc: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2736774

One advantage of the Fire Box is that apps from the official different amazon stores can be all accessed together. Look at eyeondemand for more info on install apps from different regions.

Also Amazon.com had an announced a fire stick a slim down version of Fire Box TV for 19 $ two day offer for US prime customers. Sold out now. But I look forward to it coming to europe.
