Preparing Fireplace for open fire

    Hi,

    Have had a decorative gas fire disconnected from the gas supply (see attached) and have removed the fibreglass "surround" to reveal whats left, again picture attached.

    On the face of it:

    1) is the space big enough?
    2) is it a DIY job to make it ready for an open fire? if so what's actually needed?

    I dont know enough about it, but hide the matches quick. get advise doesnt look good.

    Your going to have to break out the back of the fire opening and fit a new fireback,backfill it with vermiculite and cement mix and re concrete in the fire bed.
    Not completely a DIY job if you call in a fireplace co they would charge you in the region of €150-€220
