Any hope they'd hold an army/navy game next time and bang off a bit of artillery?. There could be a poll for which areas could be targeted and a few live rounds slipped in for the craic.

It was the Yanks showing the residents what'll happen if they block any more county music gigs.

Every time someone from outside Dublin takes offence to Dublin City being referred to as "The City Centre" all it does is reinforce the fact that you have a major inferiority complex. Stop being so insecure. If it bothers you so much what other people think, then you have more important issues to be worrying about.

And anyway, since it is the capital city, I think it has earned the right to be called the City Centre without further clarification. Get over it.

Or how about we refer to Cork city centre as the City Centre and we just keep any talk about Dublin to its designated forum?

    It depends on the context.
If RTE kept referring to The City and The Airport and were actually discussing Cork and Cork airport you'd find it confusing.

RTE and others do that quite a bit in reference to Dublin. It's just broadcasting as if you're a local instead of national media outlet.

It's not an issue if it's a local station or paper or you in Dublin talking to people in Dublin.

Even British people I know comment on how it's amazing how Dublin centric RTE can be. You'd never get away with that on BBC

Basically, for media outlets it just makes them seem small time, local and pretty ignorant.

On the flip side, you could say that people from Dublin, think that nothing else exists beyond the capital.

    :p

I love how indignant people always come in posting these, and yet know exactly which city centre is being talked about.

    I agree.

Waterford is the first place that springs to mind whenever anyone mentions the word city.

When you here the word 'Town', thats when you know they're on about Dublin.

Exactly. This country is hugely Dublin Centric. You could argue that it's the only major city in the country but the reality is most of the population live outside the capital.

Not inferiority, just accuracy. Some people appreciate that kind of attention to detail.

It depends were you're located though. If you say 'the city' or 'the airport' without specifying which one you'll have people assuming you mean the nearest one to them.

I had a situation where a Dublin based IT company told a German guy to call into their office in the xxxx Street in the City Centre. He was based in UCC and called them while standing on a street of the same name in Cork City Centre desperately trying to find them.

He concluded that Irish people are totally parochial and give 'amusing quaint' directions.
He was always going on about how nothing works properly here and we don't care but that's why he likes the place!

This is true, if only because us outside Dublin refer to the city centre as town.

Nah, Dublin loves noise, even temple bar was great craic yesterday, and I normally avoid the place like the plague.

Doesn't mean I didn't nearly **** meself when those things flew overhead.

We're a small country with one major city, tis fairly obvious

Major city by Irish standards. To be fair, a fairly small city by European or World standards.

    So does everyone in Dublin.
I'm from Dublin and live in Cork.

Locals in both places go 'down town' or 'to town' and get things 'in town'

Small towns tend to talk about 'the town' which you'll never hear in Dublin or Cork as it's 'the city'

We know what city centre is being talked about, we're just confused as to why After Hours always seems to be the place these questions are asked.
