    http://www.computerandvideogames.com/475507/nintendo-announces-new-3ds-models/

Nintendo are after announcing new models of the 3DS and XL. They'll have a second analogue stick, 2 extra shoulder buttons (so basically a built-in circle pad pro), a slightly faster CPU and Amiibo functionality. Only confirmed for Japan so far.

Edit: Won't be out here until 2015 according to Nintendo UK. Will also have customizable face plates.

Hmm not sure about upgrading with, albeit minor, hardware fragmentation how many games will make use of the extra CPU and the second analogue stick?

Though if it does something cool with the Wii U I'll probably change my mind :D

just reading on neogaf about it since no access to news sites at work.

So the second stick is a nub. Be interesting to see how comfortable it is. I do like the coloured buttons. And won't it be hard to hit ZR without hitting R?

    It has caught my interest.

Yeah going by the picture it's smaller than the face buttons. Not sure how well it will work. Not sure about the position either. They're calling it the c button. Ah nostalgia.

A Xenoblade chronicles port is exclusive for these new systems. Now.....I must buy an XL.

Next year when they come out! :(

I'll definitely be upgrading. The c button, improved displays and improved wifi etc is worth it.

I love how the face buttons match the old SNES controller.

But the reports say nothing about improving the screens resolution. Surely now was the perfect opportunity. I really like my 3DS but the quality of the screen is terrible. Especially in comparison to its direct rival the Vita.

Any kind of resolution change will only come with a follow up console to the 3DS, rather than version where they tweak a few things.

This would have been an ideal Christmas gift to myself. 2015 realise is disappointing.

I'm only after collecting all the Nintendo handhelds and now I find I have to buy two more!
    Feck!
    But I do want one.
Too much to ask they be region free?

    Probably yeah.
Pity that they introduced region locks on the handhelds after leaving them region free for so long. :(

Not really related to today's announcement but the WiiU eShop NES Remixes are getting bundled together for a 3DS release later this year

    Definitely will be region locked.

Nintendo pretty much always lock their consoles unfortunately.

They do now. Back with the earlier handhelds, there was no region locking at all.
It was the 3DS that first introduced region locking in the handhelds.

Was looking at the dsi and 3ds wiki pages. dsi was released April 2009 and 3DS announced in March 2010, though think 3DS was announced early due to leaks.

I think wait til E3 at least before buying. Then see what games are exclusive to it.

I was wondering though is this just to fill time because isn't it rumoured Nintendo are working on a system that combines home and mobile gaming? So if they have to wait for the Wii U life to end then it'll be a few years yet (hopefully, for Wii U's sake) until a new mobile system comes along.

Thinking as well that Ocarina got a 3DS, Link Between Worlds got a XL so Majora gets a New 3DS? Of course hope it works on the existing 3DS

I definitely don't need one of these, cant wait to get it...

I now own three 3DS consoles.
With this announcement I'm going to wind up with two more!

I was gonna get one of the smash bros XL's in october, but I'l wait now. My XL is over 2 years old now, so its a bit creaky, so assuming its Q1 2015, its good timing.

I will trade in my 3DS XL for that sexy Monster Hunter XL one. I just hope Gamestop will have a decentish price... I might even trade in my 3DS XL now as I dont use it now and get Credit for it, because when that new 3DS comes it, it will destroy older ones value.

Wonder will it play DS games too, if not best to keep the old 3DS XL.

Was thinking that too. Ironically I got more DS games for 3DS then actual 3DS games.

Its confirmed to be backwards compatible.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,479 ✭✭✭✭RobbingBandit

Awesome, now all I need is to be chronologically frozen for 16 months so I can buy one with some good games for it too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,460 ✭✭✭Josey Wales

I was thinking of getting the XL version when it becomes available. But then I realised it is only the smaller version that is styled like the SNES. The XL is more like the GameCube.

Think I'll have to stick with the smaller screen.

Apparently the XL pad is also styled like the SNES, you cant just tell from the initials screens.

The letters are coloured like the snes, but the buttons themselves aren't.
I think Iwata said something about it, but he speaks Japanese so...

    ?

There's good games for it right now, or are you thinking of dedicated software for the machine?
I'd say the first wave of software will appear via the EShop, easier to quickly release software there than physical carts I'd guess.

New console, new games, four to six months after it's released all the kinks should be worked out and some post release gems should have been released too.

Now to get a freeze ray. :)
