    http://www.computerandvideogames.com/475507/nintendo-announces-new-3ds-models/

Nintendo are after announcing new models of the 3DS and XL. They'll have a second analogue stick, 2 extra shoulder buttons (so basically a built-in circle pad pro), a slightly faster CPU and Amiibo functionality. Only confirmed for Japan so far.

Edit: Won't be out here until 2015 according to Nintendo UK. Will also have customizable face plates.

Hmm not sure about upgrading with, albeit minor, hardware fragmentation how many games will make use of the extra CPU and the second analogue stick?

Though if it does something cool with the Wii U I'll probably change my mind :D

just reading on neogaf about it since no access to news sites at work.

So the second stick is a nub. Be interesting to see how comfortable it is. I do like the coloured buttons. And won't it be hard to hit ZR without hitting R?

    It has caught my interest.

Yeah going by the picture it's smaller than the face buttons. Not sure how well it will work. Not sure about the position either. They're calling it the c button. Ah nostalgia.

A Xenoblade chronicles port is exclusive for these new systems. Now.....I must buy an XL.

Next year when they come out! :(

I'll definitely be upgrading. The c button, improved displays and improved wifi etc is worth it.

I love how the face buttons match the old SNES controller.

But the reports say nothing about improving the screens resolution. Surely now was the perfect opportunity. I really like my 3DS but the quality of the screen is terrible. Especially in comparison to its direct rival the Vita.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,123 ✭✭✭✭Star Lord

Any kind of resolution change will only come with a follow up console to the 3DS, rather than version where they tweak a few things.

This would have been an ideal Christmas gift to myself. 2015 realise is disappointing.

I'm only after collecting all the Nintendo handhelds and now I find I have to buy two more!
    Feck!
    But I do want one.
Too much to ask they be region free?

    Probably yeah.
Pity that they introduced region locks on the handhelds after leaving them region free for so long. :(

Not really related to today's announcement but the WiiU eShop NES Remixes are getting bundled together for a 3DS release later this year

    Definitely will be region locked.

Nintendo pretty much always lock their consoles unfortunately.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,123 ✭✭✭✭Star Lord

They do now. Back with the earlier handhelds, there was no region locking at all.
It was the 3DS that first introduced region locking in the handhelds.

I shall pre order one soon as its available.

Was looking at the dsi and 3ds wiki pages. dsi was released April 2009 and 3DS announced in March 2010, though think 3DS was announced early due to leaks.

I think wait til E3 at least before buying. Then see what games are exclusive to it.

I was wondering though is this just to fill time because isn't it rumoured Nintendo are working on a system that combines home and mobile gaming? So if they have to wait for the Wii U life to end then it'll be a few years yet (hopefully, for Wii U's sake) until a new mobile system comes along.

Thinking as well that Ocarina got a 3DS, Link Between Worlds got a XL so Majora gets a New 3DS? Of course hope it works on the existing 3DS

I definitely don't need one of these, cant wait to get it...

I now own three 3DS consoles.
With this announcement I'm going to wind up with two more!

I was gonna get one of the smash bros XL's in october, but I'l wait now. My XL is over 2 years old now, so its a bit creaky, so assuming its Q1 2015, its good timing.

I will trade in my 3DS XL for that sexy Monster Hunter XL one. I just hope Gamestop will have a decentish price... I might even trade in my 3DS XL now as I dont use it now and get Credit for it, because when that new 3DS comes it, it will destroy older ones value.

Wonder will it play DS games too, if not best to keep the old 3DS XL.

Was thinking that too. Ironically I got more DS games for 3DS then actual 3DS games.

Its confirmed to be backwards compatible.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,284 ✭✭✭✭RobbingBandit

Awesome, now all I need is to be chronologically frozen for 16 months so I can buy one with some good games for it too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,439 ✭✭✭Josey Wales

I was thinking of getting the XL version when it becomes available. But then I realised it is only the smaller version that is styled like the SNES. The XL is more like the GameCube.

Think I'll have to stick with the smaller screen.

Apparently the XL pad is also styled like the SNES, you cant just tell from the initials screens.

The letters are coloured like the snes, but the buttons themselves aren't.
I think Iwata said something about it, but he speaks Japanese so...

    ?

There's good games for it right now, or are you thinking of dedicated software for the machine?
I'd say the first wave of software will appear via the EShop, easier to quickly release software there than physical carts I'd guess.

New console, new games, four to six months after it's released all the kinks should be worked out and some post release gems should have been released too.

Now to get a freeze ray. :)

The proof of the pudding will be in the eating etc :pac: so either Nintendo will tell us it is/isn't region locked, or someone will find out by testing the new model.

So I asked today in gamestop, how much will I get for my 3ds xl. So it's 80eu credit... Nope.
Though dude said that everything they get new ninty handheld, they always do upgrade trade in deals. I think and wait until monster hunter 4 bundle comes out.

Would Cex not be a better bet? €96 according to their website.

I thought I read that here somewhere, but maybe not.
'Rumour' that I read was that, for current 3DS games and any games before that, it's region free, but is/will be region locked for 3DS LL games.
Don't have a clue where I read that though..
    :confused::confused:
The post underneath it was raving about being able to play current Japanese 3DS games..

Off I go to search the internet............ :(

I'd be happy with standard 3DS games, assuming that New 3DS games wont see that many major exclusives.

If it is region free the song goes like this.

Everywhere around the world they're coming to America.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 34,679 CMod ✭✭✭✭CiDeRmAn

The release schedule has been pretty full regardless of what region you are inhabiting so I don't think a region free 3DS is going to make a massive difference to me, at least where physical media are concerned.
On the other hand if I had access to the contents of the Japanese and American e shops, that would be far more interesting!

So, I'm thinking there is no rush in getting the new New 3DS XL until after e3 2015 since it prob won't come out till March and I have a feeling they will 'use' the extra CPU power to run SNES and N64 games on the 3ds VC, aka, exclusives to the new New 3ds. Can't see there being many cartridge exclusives TBH at this stage of the 3ds life time, maybe 5 or so till 2017 when Ninty unveil their new handheld/home console, if there is any kind of truth to Fusion....

So, if you wanna play Earthbound on your 3ds next year....

Also I'm sure there will be loads more colours of the new XL this time next year. Really like the small white one with snes buttons, wish that was the xl.

With the new changable faceplates for them, there's no longer any need for limited edition colour or patterned consoles, just limited edition faceplates.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,563 ✭✭✭✭CastorTroy

Aren't the faceplates just for the smaller version?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,123 ✭✭✭✭Star Lord

Hmm, perhaps, I'd not seen/heard anything suggesting it'd be just for one or the other...

That's just for the small sized new 'New 3DS'. The New xl has no face plates as far as we know, yet.

I could not care less. I am always more interested what's inside console, not how it looks.

It's a bit more than that though, the XL I find is vastly superior to use & hold.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,835 ✭✭✭✭cloud493

Its the screen on the XL for me. And the analogue stick is much better as well, and the battery life is far superior. But they haven't said they're not doing XL faceplates so.
