It wasn't actually a glitch, the government have finally copped the f&ck on and are no longer paying teachers for the 3 months that they are off work.

From now on teachers get 22 days holidays like most other employees and must report to work During summer months to paint, clean and maintain the school in preparation for the students returning.

Actually this belongs in the rave thread

I'm not a Teacher but they actually don't get paid for the summer holidays. Their salary is for X number of weeks a year and payment of it is spread out over 52 weeks.

God forbid people would actually have to care for their own kids while the schools were closed.

    What a load of nonsense!

Their salary scale is based on a 52 week calander year (26 forthrightly payments) and moves up in annual units on the scale.

Based on X weeks and spread over 52 weeks :D have you ever considered a career in dept of finance?

Ps, where did I mention teachers minding kids whilst schools are closed???

Hold on there a second Gav! What's all this about teachers and three months holidays? I'm a primary teacher and we only get two months! Unless of course you're talking about the Hallowe'en mid term, two and a bit weeks at Christmas, Feb mid term, Easter fortnight, and then of course one last mid term as well! Then I suppose it prob adds up to the three months alright! That must mean those slackers at second level have four months! The ba#tards!!

I know how often they are paid but they are only contracted for roughly 10 months of the year I think.

Believe me their salary has also gone down a lot rather than up over recent years but that's another story.

I know you didn't mention kids being minded. I was referring to a lot of parents who hate their kids being off school because they have to make arrangements themselves for the kids to be taken care of and this is what results in a lot of begruddgery towards teachers holidays.

    .

You're obviously referring to the parasite on society that is the temp teacher because not a single permanent teacher has experienced a salary cut ;)

If their job is so amazing, then why don't you become a teacher?

Everybody knows the perks of being a teacher but there is one huge drawback that probably deters a lot of people, having to deal with brats of kids for 8- 9 months of the year.

Not to mention all the homework correction, class preparation, occasional yard duty. Primary teachers work far more than the 9 to 2:30 that the ignorant believe. A friend of mine in Australia is a teacher and she told me she has to work a fair bit of the summer holidays getting stuff ready for the next year. Teacher's work doesn't start and finish with the kids being present.

I certainly don't begrudge them the extra time off.

Because I have no desire to take a massive pay cut or to work more hours than I currently do

Depends on the school. I've started working in a private secondary school (non-teaching staff) and I can't believe how polite the kids are. I actually thought they were taking the p1ss. But I know other schools are battle-grounds.
Teachers do get paid for their holidays but you'll find they make up the hours during the term, a lot of after school activities (sports, drama, etc) homework and class preparation. Its also a lot of study/work to become a teacher. Can't really begrudge them, they do an important job.

I agree that secondary teachers work hard but primary school teachers have it handy. I guess they do put in a lot of effort with the Xmas play and the school sports day and let's not forget the practise mass for holy communion.

Paddy o'brien (age 5) is going to be a nightmare to deal with this year now that he's learned the word NO.

But you're right, 4 years of study and college is hard f€ckin work. Wouldn't wish it on anybody

Edit: don't even get me started on their 1.1 million euro pension fund at retirement. (Options to retire from age 55 depending on service)

Getting an unsolicited text from a timing company about an upcoming race. They even personalised it and addressed it to me by my first name. No option to stop receiving spam

Illegal. You can make a complaint to the data protection commissioner.

Here's a case study from the Data Commissioner's website: Case study 2. They shouldn't send unsolicited marketing messages, and if they do, they should have an opt-out option. Could be costly if they persist.

got the text as well, very annoyed as I'm particular about marketing of any nature when it comes to my mobile number.

Def in breach of Data Protection, local business pulled this same sort of stuff a few years back with no opt out. Bang out of order to handle data in this way.
