Couple of questions on this phone:

    Does WhatsApp work again?
    Is Skype available?
Is there an easy way to switch mobile data on and off e.g like a widget in android?

    Thanks

Windows phone has setting to turn mobile data on and off, no app needed. WiFi Is a totally different setting. In w8.1, it recommends WiFi left on

You have access to quick toggles in the notification centre in Windows Phone 8.1. Very easy, legal and painless to download, if it hasn't automatically reached your device already.

Whatsapp works. I don't use it though, I use jongla instead. Really quick, reliable and lightweight. Few people use it however, so you'll need to invite friends to download the app.

Skype is built into the phone and is pretty good these days. I was happily chatting away with a friend in Oz not too long ago via video chat.

There isn't a widget for data like there is in android. Which is a bit annoying. You can put a shortcut tile on the home screen to bring you to the setting though.

You can turn off WiFi from the notifications drop down. But it doesn't make that much difference to battery life.

You were using Skype video chat on the 520?
How did you do this as it only has a rear facing camera?

If a phone doesn't have a front facing camera you can stand in front of a mirror to video chat using the back camera. Clunky but works.

I have a Lumia 930, but you're right, you cant do it via front facing cam on 520
