Best of luck tomorrow lads. The supporters deserve to win the big one. In all the years of Mayo driving through and stopping off in Longford i've never seen or heard of one incident. Yee are a credit to your county

Just to note, you would have every right to call into the Cork forum and say we are chokers because we are..

Someone might have every right to do something but it still lacks class, as does setting it up, very few want to read it.

Btw I hope Mayo win tomorrow I will be supporting you but I dont think the Mayo team have enough to win especially up in the forward line. Hope Im wrong and if im wrong I will come here tommorrow and congrats the Mayo team.

I don't think it's fair on any team to call them chokers or bottlers, such discussions tend to generate more heat than light.

The people of Mayo appreciate your good wishes!

The problem I have with it is that its a lazy opinion.

Its easy to throw out there.

But today I think that if Mayo lose there will a taste of missed opportunity/lack of fight about it.
Kerry are not great, this Mayo team should be beating them.

If Mayo win and go on to lose to Dublin then it will not be a case of the above, they will be beaten once again in a final by the standout team in the country.

I know its not the match thread but I'd agree with that. I don't think Kerry could handle the game Mayo brought into the championship last year. So it really is up to them IMHO.

I'd better start getting ready to go. Sometimes I wonder if living 15 minutes from CP is a good or a bad thing ;)

For anyone who follows the most excellent Emmet Ryan, he tips Mayo in today's Business Post.
Being honest - i've yet to come across anyone who offers a better analysis of games either pre or post, except post match stats offered by the also excellent dontfoul blog.

If Emmet Ryan says we'll win, then i'm a much more confident man heading for Croker today!.

A team that chokes is a team that has the ability to win but does not because they cannot cope with the pressure. I'll take the example of the1985 snooker final. Steve Davis clearly a better player than Dennis Taylor but pressure got to him. He choked.
Not sure I can think of an AI final where I believe a team choked.

Cork hurlers did not choke this year. They were just not that good in the first place; they werent good enough to put themselves in a position to choke. You look at positions no.6 and no.11 on the Cork team (to take just 2 key positions in hurling as an example). Ellis and Cooper are well short of the ability of their counterparts on the Kilkenny, Tipp, Clare, Limerick teams.

Mayo also have never choked in a final. They were simply never good enough to win any of the finals they played in. They just always came up against a better team. I dont believe the pressure or hype ever got to them - they just always came up against teams with better ability. Fr, Tod is correct - it is a lazy opinion and is dismissive of some of the outstanding teams that Mayo have played in past finals. The only time you could argue that Mayo 'choked' in a final was the first few minutes against Donegal in 2012.

Hopefully the Mayo management not taking off number 11 of until he collapsed 2 other times didn't make his injury any worse.Very bad on their behalf in my opinion.

This is a good Mayo minor team but whoever made the call to leave Cian Hanley on there should be dismissed straight away. Its only a minor game, a players long term health should be the primary concern at all times. Whether the player wanted to carry on or not is irrelevant that call should be taken out of his hands.

By your own definition Mayo choked last year when they were far superior to Dublin for 40mins, they also choked in 96. Mayos problem has always been the absence of quality forwards. No problem making the chances but no one to put them away. I fear that could be their undoing again today. Kerry are so economical that they can still win with 35 - 40% possession. If Mayo don't have an above 80% conversion rate today I don't see them winning and I can't see that happening.

Freeman and Gibbons in, delighted with that.

Agreed. Am a proud Mayo man and was at both finals in 1996 and we threw them away. 6 up in first game and 7 (i think) in the replay. The Gods didnt help either with the ball bouncing over Madden and the odd sending off of McHale and Coyle but the fact remains we were way up in both games and were reeled in. It was an excellent Meath team but we choked as much as it pains me to say it.

Was at 89, 97, 04, 06, 12 and 13 and we didnt choke in those (although last year is slightly arguable).

Great draw for Mayo.5 points down at half time with only 14 men, they would have taken a draw at that stage.

If they can win 35 minutes of football with 14 men by 5 points then imagine what they can do with 15 men if they perform next week.

Brilliant second half performance by Mayo. If they can pull that off with 14 men, with some consistency they well have the beating of that Kerry team.

My god, I haven't been that worried about a semi since Brokeback Mountain!

    So close for Mayo!!!!

I think both teams need another game to stand any kind of shot at beating the winners of the other semi-final.......

Just not sure my nerves can take it!

Need to rewatch this game before know full picture. Very interesting was Cafferkey being replaced near the end. Consistently he has given up goal opportunities. It's too many games with too many chances at this stage. People labelled Kevin Keane after 2012 final, would Cafferkey have been able to beat Murphy in the air?
Hopefully Keegan back for next game. Softest sending off since Tony Davis in 93 All Ireland. 'Attempt to strike ....'. There'd be 5 sending offs per game applying rules that strictly.
Aidan OShea immense n ref criminally slow to yellow card the constant fouls on him.
Keith Higgins it seemed like had huge game on ODonoghue.
Looking forward to Limerick as a venue might fly home for it. Should be a brilliant atmosphere

Caffereky only came off because he cramped up. Not interesting at all.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,019 ✭✭✭TCDStudent1

Great heart shown by Mayo. Kerry also showed a great never day die attititude - I was sure Mayo had it with just a few minutes to go.

I think Parsons on for Gibbons at HT was the key decision for Mayo getting back into the match. Pasrsons didnt get on a huge amount of ball but David Moran was nowehere near as influential in the second half. Donal Vaughan & Colm Boyle really stepped up in the second half too and Buckley/Geaney were not as prominent for Kerry.

Thought Cafferkey struggled alright - Paul Geaney did well on him and Donaghy caused mayhem in that full back line. Be interesting to see if Kerry start Donaghy the next day and try to exploit Mayo there.

Fair enough seemed like injured at the end but he was targetted throughout the game n won very few high balls or 50:50's especially in the first half.

A word of warning for any Mayo folk that will be making their maiden voyage to Limerick next Sat.
Ye might be tempted to try and get Mackey Stand tickets as its the only covered stand.
If the weather is anyway fine avoid it. Its a very flat stand and if the person in front is any way tall? Youll see fcuk all.
Great view from the uncovered stand and from both terraces.

    What maiden voyage to Limerick.

Sure weren't we there for the 2008 minor SF replay v Kerry.

In which a few of this senior squad made names for themselves.

I'd say that was the hardcore crew. I'm guessing it will be a few fans 1st trip to the Gaelic Grounds.
