    Hi folks,

need to repalce a few handles on UPVC windows but unfortunately, the vertical mechanism on one of them is fecked. I can take off the handle, but the square slot that would normally receive the handle is completely shattered so I cant open to replace. Any tricks of the trade to open, other than brute force ??

How mangled are we talking here? There isn't usually a huge amount of resistance in the locking mechanism (unless it's seized), so generally if you can get anything at all into the slot that will get a bite, it will turn.

A photo would help if you could upload one....

Hi Mike, difficult to get a snap as its just a 15mm approx hole. But the square recepticle on the mechanism itself is fecked. Not even a chance of retro-fitting something to get a 1/4 turn on the bar to open. Brute force next step ??

TBH, yes, I'd be going through the toolbox to find a screwdriver or similar that's the right size to wedge into the square socket on the mechanism, and turning it a quarter turn to open....

Unfortunately, the square slot is not there :( Totally disintegrated. Time for a flat jemmy bar me thinks. I was toying with the idea of removing the DGU retaining strips and hoping for inner side access to the mechanism strip but removing the glass may not expose anything.

removing the dg units will expose nothing try an extension from a socket set got me out of trouble with 1 of these before cant remember what size 1/4 or 3/8 I think

Sounds like the gearbox on your espag is worn out...jump onto youtube and search for "opening a espag" ...id attach a link if i was able.

Should only take a minute to get the window open
