Built in wardrobes & flooring. Help?? :)

    Hi there,
    Doing a revamp of our upstairs want to get built in wardrobes approx 3half metres in width. My primary query is this.....
    We are replacing the laminate wooden floor with new laminate. Should we put down the floor first or put in the wardrobes first? I understand if they are sliding (undecided but most likely) that we won't be able put a lip at the base of wardrobe. Would the wardrobes be better on the laminate or just floorboards. Finally if flooring ever needs replacing should we be factoring this in.
    Has anybody used IKEA, Harvey Norman etc or a local carpenter and what estimate sort of cost are we looking at for a wardrobe that size?
    Also if anybody has any advice re getting built in wardrobes or any thing we should be aware of please advise.

    You want the wardobes on the floor boards and not the laminate floor. The laminate floor has underlay which will make it spongy.

    The good thing about the ikea approach is that you can go back and buy different accessories. The standard wardrobe they do is 1M wide, so you can see I used some timber to make up the gap. The also do a 50cm units, so if you have 3.5m you can have 3 & 1/2 wardobes all with matching doors.

    If they are going into an alcove and its a bit wider than 3.5M i would attach a baton onto the wall on each side and screw the wardobe into these, makes a very sturdy job.

    The 1m wardrobe frames, full height, were €45 when I done the one above, now i think they are closer to €70. Still worth it for what your getting.

    A good DIY'er should be able to handle this, make sure you have the head room for standing up the wardrobe. Also you can pick up a lenght of pelmet for across the top from their kitchen department ;-)
