Peugeot 307 (2004) 1.4L - Engine knock

Hi peeps. Having a problem with my wife’s 2007 Peugeot 307 and having No luck resolving it.

A soft knocking sound has presented itself. The sound seems to be in time with the revs and I think is emanating from behind the engine on the timing belt side.
The sound is there while idling. I think it is there when revving but hard to tell due to the engine noise.

The car goes perfectly as it always has but the wife is not comfortable driving with this new noise.

Last year I fitted a new timing belt kit, water pump etc. so thought there must be something wrong. This week I fitted a new timing belt kit and the noise is still there.
I also thought it might be the crankshaft pulley as the dampeners in these wear causing the pulley to be un-true and vibrate. I removed the aux belt and crankshaft pulley and started the car. The noise was still there.

The noise can be heard in the cabin which is why I think it’s behind the engine. When I use a crew driver as a stethoscope on the engine head I can’t hear the noise but when I place it on the engine mount (Above timing belt assembly) the noise is audible.

I made a quick video of the noise (See link below). Due to the nature of my mobile the engine noise is overpowering but I think the noise is quite clear at 51 seconds:

I would really like to get this sorted and would welcome any advice and/or suggestions.

    Could be a con-rod bearing.

    Could be a con-rod bearing.
Thanks for the response. The car has less than 60 000 miles on the clock. Is it likely that the con rod bearings would go?

Hmm. I like it not, that doesn't sound like normal valvetrain clatter. You should get a mechanic to check it out.

We had a 1999 1.4 l Peugeot with big end noise but it I would describe it as a rumble, but that was on an engine with 160,000 miles. Can't really say if it was same as yours. That car failed with clutch gearbox and we had another one, 2000 year that failed with head gasket about 150,000.

Point being that if your engine has genuine mileage and regular oil change I would not be expecting this to be major internal wear noise at 60K..... not that helpful I know...

I took the car to a mechanic at the weekend. He had a listen to the engine using a mechanics stethoscope.
All the noise was coming from the water pump area.
I bought and fitted a new water pump. The noise is gone, problem sorted. Don't know how this happened as the water pump was not even a year old but glad it's sorted.
    Thanks for the comments peeps.

Examine the impeller on the old water pump, see if there's any scrape marks on the ends of the fins.

I had a 306 which the water pump was running off square and cutting into the engine block. Caused the timing belt to slide to the front of the water pump pully, cut through the timing cover and eventually break when 1/2 of the belt had worn away. What a mess to fix
