Hi, i joined a golf club last week and just completed my 3 cards to get a handicap. The scores were 97 / 102 / 95. The course is par 72. Is there a mathematical formula for calculating handicaps ... And if so what would i get or how is it judged ?

What was your stableford score for each card?
    Much more relevant than strokes.

But no, there is no formula

    I'd guess about 18

I'd agree, Im sure there were a few large numbers in those rounds, 18 seems reasonably achievable with those scores.

Some use a system of putting all scores worse than doubles back to doubles, work out the stableford score and pick the best front and back 9s from the three cards. Just a guide though I think.

Can't see you getting anymore than 17.5 (guess).

    I put in 3 cards of 96, 98 and 103 .

    I was giving a HC of 21

they will probably focus on your best card
i wouldnt be surprised if it was between 20-22

Could be anything between 15 and 20 but probably 18.

They would look at the 95 and round anything that was over double down. if there are no big run of pars or a super 9 on the other cards then they will disregard them.

So 95 minus a shot for anything over a double so depending on the round between 18 and 20.

Congratulations on your 19! What club did you join? I just moved to Dublin and I'm looking for a club to join to get my official handicap.

How long does it take to get your handicap after you've sent in your cards?

Varies, all down to whenever the HC sec gets to review your cards.
Most would do it weekly so you shouldn't have that long to wait.

I had mine 10 mins after walking off the 18th as the Sec was having a cup of coffee and reviewed them over it :)
