The Pogues
Rory Gallagher

Others worthy of mention but that don't get played on my CD player as much would be Sinead O'Connor, U2, Christy Moore, the Frames, Thin Lizzy, Damien Rice and I'm sure plenty more I'm forgetting about.

I must mention a band I personally think were one of the most under rated Irish bands ever: Something Happens. They were a seriously talented band who produced at least three albums of cracking guitar pop and they should have been huge. If you compare them to say, Weezer, who play a similar type of music but have had massive success, it's criminal that the Happens never went beyond filling the usual Irish mid level venues.

Lots of love for Paul Cleary too - both Blades and The Partisans (would love to see the Partisans one and only six track mini album reissued on CD.)

John O'Connor is one of the finest concert pianists in the world.

It is arguably impossible to toss up whether John O'Connor is a better musician than Rory Gallagher or not. You really can only easily classify musicians within genre imo.

Ok, the Pogues are alright, used to love U2 but one band is more Irish than both, 4 members, 8 Irish parents.

I think there's a huge amount of great Irish singers and musicians to choose from. Some examples of those who come to mind include Luke Kelly, Planxty, Christy Moore, Phil Lynnott, Rory Gallagher, Dolores Keane, De Dannan, Paul Brady, Andy Irvine, Clancy Brothers/Liam Clancy, Wolfe Tones, Fureys, U2, etc, etc. Also the OLDER country music like Big Tom is grand too.

In fact, most Irish music is grand apart from that new age country and Irish stuff. Someone mentioned sarcastically Richie Kavanagh, Conall Gallen and Mike Denver. The latter is what I'm talking about: him and Derek Ryan, 3 Amigos and all that stuff. Richie and Conall are unashamedly culchie comedy acts and are good at what they do and have funny and witty songs. Denver takes himself seriously and is a caricature of bad country music at its worst. It is scary how popular this stuff is. I will always remind anyone I meet who does not like Daniel (who is a decent artist in the grand scheme of things) about the existence of this stuff.
